Hay Dealers Saleman?

I'm sure the first word is hay - I'll have to check her husbands occupation.

Hmmmm her husband was a grain store keeper - so I suppose she could have have been the wife of a hay dealer salesman.

Yup I'd go with that - what do you say? Yes? No?

Then I'd definitely go with hops as it is a grain.

Annette and Janice

Must say that I see Hay, rather than Hop. What throws me a bit is the s at the end of the word

My first instinct did/does lie with hay too. The second word looks like dealers, the third word I suppose is still open for debate.

Is that a usual thing to write on a death cert? I've haven't seen that on any others I've come across.

This style "wife of a ____" and no name for the spouse, was something that was only used in the period 1856-1860. After that, the husband's name and occupation would be in there (or for the death of a married man, the wife's name).

As far as I can tell, they went for too much information (good for genealogists) on the 1855 certificates. I can only guess that the registrars complained that this was too much information for them to be taking. So from 1856 it was simplified. Thankfully (from a genealogy viewpoint) the infomation was increased a bit from 1861.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
