Dianne, you may have given some info somewhere in the thread, but is there any info on the possible reason for this move to Scotland?, e.g. occupation ?

Hi David On the certificate that Ted kindly sent me it said that Ethel Vessey was a widow died 8th Feb 1955 was living with her son Vivian Stannard and his daughter in law Flora who was the informant at her death at their residence 45 Shandow Brae Balloch
I have sent to the Dunbarton Local library to see it there may have been a death notice in the paper which could possibly say if there were children.
Fingers crossed.
I am about to do more researching on my mother family soon ,She was Heather Menzies Great grand daughter of Robert MENZIES AND AGNES BRUCE. Canongate area The story goes that my mother is a descendant of THE" ROBERT THE BRUCE" You never know.
Thank you for you interest

Hi Dianne

Just one point - from the cert Flora is Ethel's daughter-in-law not Vivian's - it is more likely that she is Vivian's wife. There is is no trace of a marriage on SP for Vivian / Flora as far as you can search on-line (up to 1930). No trace of kids either up to 1905. No deaths for them up to 1955 - but if they died in Scotland after then you may still get details at NRH in Edinburgh.

There is one Vessey female birth in 1873 that may have some distant relationship as the parents are detailed as married in Nottinghamshire - I'll send on these details by PM.

As regards your Menzies / Bruce connection:-

Marriage - Cannongate, Edinburgh 13/08/1838 - Robert Menzies to Agnes Bruce. You could order the OPR Extract on SP for £10 (sent to you in paper copy). No trace of children for these two in Scotland as far as I can find. There is an Agnes Menzies shown on the 1961 census at Coopers Entry, 130 Cannongate. I traced her and do not think she is Agnes Bruce/ Menzies.

Birth - there is a birth of a Robert Menzies - Bn 31/5/1800 in Cannongate - son of Robert Menzies / Jean Lidle

Hope this starts you off in the right direction - might not lead to Robert the Bruce but you'll have fun trying !!

Best regards

Ted

Hi Ted. Thank you for the birth certificate of Jane Menzies. As of yet I can not make a connection to her but I sure will chase it up. Up until now I have not searched for Vessey in Scotland & maybe this is where some of my elusive ones got. to. Thank you for sending this to me.

It is some years since I have actively done some research on my Mums Menzies Tree I became involved in the Vessey side when through an on-line connection in Lincolnshire I found that our 5 times grandfathers were brothers & her being Johnnie on the spot have been able to go back to 1732 but funny enough couldn't nt find the more recent ones.

About the MENZIES Yes this is my Robert Menzies married in 11/8/1838 to Agnes Bruce She was Born October 22 had nine siblings all born in Canongate between 1805 - 1823 Agnes was the daughter of James Bruce & Agnes Henderson

I really must get back on to this one as Scotland has got some very good research material.

Thank you for your interest & trouble
DIANNE

p.s.

Me and my twin sister are coming over your way in August. We have been to Britain a couple of times.before & we absolutely love your countryThe Gardens the history & of course Scotland. People always say Scotland is dull and misty but both times the weather turned it on, with lovely weather.for us.

Thanks a Very much appreciated

Dianne

If you make it to Scotland in August I'm sure Balloch will be of interest to you. This link has some great info on the town and surrounding area.
