Defintutely ?latelayer, and I can't image what else fits apart from the railway occupation of Platelayer.
Mother's maiden name, via an IGI crosscheck is HILL.

Aye I know where the Cow Wynd is, I think part of my family came from where the Mathisons (bakers) building is now. Or around that area. The Pairhouse?

The Poor House and Lunatic Asylum were on Cow Wynd / High Station Road , where they built the new Comley Park Primary School and where the car showroom is.
if you look at:
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... lkirk.html
And click the
bottom left section of the map you can zoom into the institution.
Incidentaly on the opposite side of the road was where the Electricity Generating station was - council depot to you and now the Salvation Army and those new flats!

I've never seen a good town plan of Larbert on the NLS site [ AndrewP may correct me there!]
but if you go to
http://www.old-maps.co.uk and put in Larbert as a place name they have one dated 1865 .
