Re: TRYING TO TRACE A MINING ACCIDENT.....
Hi There
John Johnston is my Great Great Grandfather on my paternal side. He was born 11 April 1873 in Bathgate and married Isabella Fisher. John was the son of Thomas Johnston and Margaret Morris. Thomas Johnston was the owner of Starlaw Farm, he was an agricultural labourer as well as a carting contractor, the farm was passed down to Andrew Johnston the youngest son bypassing the others and caused quite a family rift. I have been doing our genealogy for awhile now and have quite a bit of information. John Johnston is my grandfather's grandfather and although my grandfather has now passed on my great auntie has told me many stories about him and Burnvale Cottage. John Johnston's son Thomas (1901) was a chemical plumber bought the Seafield oil works office and turned one of the rooms into a bathroom and it was the first indoor bathroom in the village of Seafield.
This information is from the museum of Scottish shale oil website.
John Johnston, retortman, Burnvale Cottage, Blackburn Road, Bathgate, died on 14 June 1929 at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, from injuries sustained on 22 April 1929 at Deans Oil Works, Bathgate, when he was crushed between a runaway hutch and a brick wall. NAS Reference: SC41/13/1929/15
I am in contact with many of my distant and elderly family members and so am getting lots of family stories and photos passed on to me.
Would love to share any family history information I have with any other relatives, my e-mail address is sharlene_terryATyahoo.co.nz
