Many people today are only familiar with the pulmonary type of TB.

In fact, tuberculosis aka Tubercle Bacillus is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can affect many other parts of the body with grievous condequences.

And where did little Agnes Muir go?
Well, sometimes to answer your questions, you need to look at what you already know #-o

I found Agnes in the 1881 census. Actually I already found her without knowing it. Years ago, I found her grandmother Agnes Murray Muir living with a Kidd family is the 1881 census. It listed her as a grandmother but I just ignored it since I assumed it must be from one of Agnes's other children. This lead me to scotlandspeople and I found her marriage in 1876 to a Thomas Kidd. Interesting enough it lists her father as Alexander Brown but doesn't say that her parents were married (which fits). On the census they have a son William age 3 (so born around 1878) but searching scotlands people turned up 5 more children but not William. I found Marion Muir(1877), Agnes Murray (1879), Annie Harvey Kidd (1882), Robert John (1886), James (1889).

Sometimes going over what is already found is useful

\:D/ OK, I think I found my elusive Jane. The 1861 census index on Ancestry did the trick.
Craigie, Ayrshire, ED 4, Page 9, Address: Pocknave
Jean Muir, 27, Dally Ayrshire

She is hiding in Craigie, under the name Jean Muir born in Dally, Ayrshire (well they didn't get that right but close enough to Dailly) The only unsure thing is her age is a bit off. From the other census, she was 9 in 1841, 20 in 1851 and 27 in 1861 and 32 in 1863 when she died, so it looks like she was wobbling on her age.

From looking at this, I suspect she is a servant in the household. It seems pretty standard for her.
