Hi folks
I wonder, ...somewhere there must be a list of who the registrars were for a particular area at a particular time that is not written in their own handwriting.
Any thoughts as to where this info can be found?

Best wishes
Lesley

New Register House, or possibly archived at West Register House (NAS).

OK - Mr Archer was bugging me. This is what I've found from my collection of South Leith marriages & births:

1884 Gilbert Archer is registrar for South Leith (he is in 1881 census as such too) but asst. Registrar was JWM Archer
1878 Gilbert Archer is registrar & John M Archer is asst.
1892 J Archer is still assisstant
1893 [what looks like] JWM Archer is registrar

I remember looking into this guy before, and I'm sure I read somewhere that J was Gilbert's son, but I can't remember where I read it.
However, the IGI has this, who I think may be our guy as Annie Sinclair Archer is the wife of Gilbert in 1881 census:

JOHN MARK ARCHER
Birth: 12 AUG 1855 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

Parents:
Father: GILBERT ARCHER
Mother: ANN SINCLAIR

Best wishes
