...who has never been an advocate of the "Flying Saucer Theory" in relation to those "missing" from the census, or who suddenly "appear" after no previous trace; in which context this is my all-time perfect example to date ........... and if it could happen in the censuses, might it not also happen as well occasionally in the BMDs ?! ..............

The use of SOUNDEX/NameX/Wildcards etc., will solve many such a problematic situation, but can anyone suggest how a search for "O'BRIEN" would have turned up this [G/B]REEN 1901 record?.............................

Nope!, - there is a workaround which quickly produces the right family, and the conclusion that the enumerator got it badly wrong, especially when there's another surname on the same page that shows exactly how the start of the real name would have looked had he got it right.

I saw the O'Neil on the same page, Did a quick check on SP that a John O'Brien did indeed marry a Mary White sometime just before the son was born and sure enough there was.
I didn't actually look at the marriage entry as I only have one credit left at the moment but thought it too much of a coincidence for it not to be them.

Having included the record in a lecture and looked even more closely at the entry I'm veering towards the idea that it is BREEN, not GREEN

thanks for the reply i came to the same conclusion. from what i have found not verified yet,it looks like margaret was illegitimate so could have been sent to live with relations i can't find a marriage for her mother to anyone named whyte//white. on margarets marriage to george williams
in 1906 it say's hannah whyte subsequently married to patrick mc mahon
hannah was margarets mother hannah was 21 in 1890. margaret was 21 in 1906 so hannah must have had margaret when she was 16 years old
