To stop Quicktime "taking over" image files...

Either click the Desktop Icon for Quicktime or open it from Program Files.

Select Edit, Preferences, Quicktime Preferences and File Types

The item in the list "Images - Still Image Files" can be expanded by clicking the + sign. I've unticked all except MacPaint, PICT and Quicktime Images.

You'll probably find that any time QT updates it resets these. Just go back in and do it again.
