Should be sorted now - just yell if it's not!!

It's not so easy to see as it has been uploaded as a jpg, so there is not much enlargement possible. Any chance it could be uploaded as the original tiff?

Best wishes
Lesley

On looking at maps for the place names and comparing them to the certificate, I think they were both from Sculamus, Strath.

--> Current OS map showing Sculamas <--

All the best,

One possibility for John's mother is Christy MacLure. The onle IGI has the following children born to Murdoch Graham and Christy MacLure:

MARGARET GRAHAM - Christening: 29 DEC 1815 Sleat, Inverness, Scotland
DONALD GRAHAM - Christening: 25 DEC 1821 Sleat, Inverness, Scotland
ANNE GRAHAM - Christening: 06 DEC 1828 Sleat, Inverness, Scotland
JOHN GHRAHAM - Christening: 13 JUL 1831 Strath, Inverness, Scotland

A submitted marriage entry for 1867 suggests there was also a NEIL GRAHAM born to this couple.

If Murdoch Graham and Christy MacLure were his parents, then his age was more likely 33 rather than 53.

For the other side of the family, there is a marriage in Strath on 03-Mar-1831 of Dond. MacInness and Ann MacRae. That has to be a good possibility for her parents. No records for any children to this couple show up on the online IGI. That would make Ann that married John probably aged 33, looking back at that certificate.

All the best,

AndrewP

So pulling togerther the latest decipherings, we are at:

1865 on the twenty-sixth day at Broadford, Strath
After Banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland

John Graham, his X mark, Letterman(?), bachelor, 33, Sculamus, Strath
Ann MacInnes, her X mark, Alexander McKinnon, witness, Alexander ______, witness for the _____, spinster, 33(?), Sculamus, Strath.

Murdoch Graham, Crofter, deceased and Christy Graham, M.S. MacLure
Donald MacInnes, Crofter, deceased and Ann(?) MacInnes, M.S. MacRae

Signed Donald MacKenzie Minr of Strath
Signed Alexander MacKinnon Witness
Alexander ______ Witness

1865 December 26th at Broadford
Donald _____ Registrar

The first pair of witnesses should say something to the effect of confirming that these were both the people who made the X-marks.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello again Annette, Lesley, Andrew,

I am very grateful for the time and effort you good folk are expending on my behalf. That you do it for nothing, is just remarkable. I wish there was something more tangible I could forward to each one of you.
Maybe I shall find a way........... ha ha.

I am getting more and more engrossed by what you have dug up out of the records......... I am digesting it like gold.

Many thanks to one and all.

Cheers

Bryn

Hi Bryn
We're glad to be able to help. :D

That is what Talking Scot is all about - helping each other out. Usually with any given problem, several heads can be much more effective than one! Being able to pool the collective knowledge of our many members from all over the world is one of the great benefits of an online forum such as this. If one member does not know the answer, or where to find out, another member usually does!

Best wishes
Lesley

Still thanking you all - and still need some help

Dear Lesley, et al,

I have managed to procure another re-scan of the 1865 Marriage Certificate of my Great-Grand Father, John Graham.

Please may I have your expert deciphering opinions of the all the portions?

Even the Footnote written on the 11 May 1861 (item 16) tells a story I can't quite read. Also from 26 Dec 1865 - 11 May 1861 there were no marriages in this particular Strath region it seems??

I'm going to upload the TIFF file now............ so this message will be before you before the TIFF.

All the best, and thank you in anticipation.

Bryn

Dear Bryn,

We were most of the way there from the previous one. Here is what I make out, with the changes in red.

1865 on the twenty-sixth day at Broadford, Strath
After Banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland

John Graham, his X mark,
Fisherman, bachelor, 33, Sculamus, Strath
Ann MacInnes, her X mark, Alexander McKinnon, witness, Alexander
Robertson, witness; Domestic Servant, spinster, 23, Sculamus, Strath.

Murdoch Graham, Crofter, deceased and Christy Graham, M.S. MacLure
Donald MacInnes, Crofter, deceased and Ann MacInnes, M.S. MacRae

Signed Donald MacKenzie Minr of Strath
Signed Alexander MacKinnon Witness
Alexander
Robertson Witness

1865 December 26th at Broadford
Donald
Faichney, Registrar

The paragraph written below ws the closing remarks for that book. 15 marriages had been registered in Strath in 1865. A new book would be started for 1866. The closing paragraph was written on 11th May 1866 by an examiner, and counter-signed by the registrar.

Broadford 11th May 1866
I hereby certify in terms of the statutory provisions I have along with the Registrar carefully
compared and examined this Register Book and the Duplicate and Fifteen of the numbered
spaces which they respectively contain are occupied by Entries and all the Entires in the
Register Book correspond with those similarly numbered in the Duplicate.
Alex G ____ , Examiner
Donald Faichney, Registrar

All the best,

AndrewP
