Hello Katrina,
Now you say you are confused with your family, John Brown Muir, born 1912, Cambletown.
Is this a family story that he was born in Cambletown, and that he was born in 1912.
If you take his death date 1994, Glasgow, he is aged 80 years. that gives a birth year of about 1914. there is a John Brown Muir, born 1914. in Cambletown.
I suggest this is your John Brown Muir.
Muir is not a popular Name in Cambletown, there are only 84, in the 1891 census, and as James Muir, born about, 1823, his son James Muir, who married Elizabeth Mclelland, in Ayr, then appears on the 1881. census in Cambletown, then there is a good chance John Brown Muir, is his grandson.
Your only way of proving this is to order the John Brown Muir's, birth certificate, of 1914. Cambletown.
Regards,
Jonn.

I would love to go further back with my family tree but first i need to find my stray muir..kind regards katrina

Hi again,
If I have this straight, going between your two posted topics...
1) you are sure you have the right Malcolm, and have his parents from his birth cert.
2) His father James was born in Ayr according to the 1891 and 1901 censuses. So far, so good.
3) Do you have James' death certificate to verify that his parents were James Muir and Margaret Reid? If so, then I think we are headed down the right path in the other topic:

Just trying to straighten this out and make sure we are not wandering off in an unverified direction!

Sarah

As long as you have proof that James McKinnon Muir is the same person as the father of Malcolm (is his middle name on Malcolm's birth cert?) then it looks like the link is sound. James & Elizabeth's marriage cert should also give you that information.katrina42 wrote:hi will get more credits for scotlands people for death, have birth cert for james mckinnon muir and james muir and margaret reid are definitly his parents on it.

James is still alive in 1901:katrina42 wrote:right this is where things start to go wrong i have james's death as being 0n 15/07/1900.will to look this up, sure it was given from census records.
1901
36 Main St, Campbeltown, Argyll
James Muir, 52, Head, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Butcher
Elizabeth Muir, 46, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Malcolm Muir, 19, Son, born Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Carter
Mary Muir, 13, Daur, born Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scholar
Mary Brown, 19, Boarder, born Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Farm Servant
Samuel Guthrie, 63, Boarder, born Colmonel, ayrshire, Quay Labourer
Do you have a certificate for the James who died on 15/07/1900? I hope his parents aren't James Muir and Margaret Reid!

Sarah
