Hello KMG and [TS_welcome]
I'll let someone who knows the area answer your Walmer Terrace question, but Blair's Hotel has been discussed before on the forum and appears to have been at 95 Renfield St

Hello KMG,

Glasgow Herald, Monday, December 6, 1886
A report of the annual meeting of the YWCA includes:
“The boarding house at 95 Renfield Street has been quite full during the whole year, and the refreshment-room has been well patronised.”

Glasgow Herald, Monday, February 3, 1890
BLAIR’S HOTEL, 95 Renfield Street. First-class Temperance. Special Accommodation for Marriages and Evening Parties. Rooms for dining 100 people, terms from 3s 6d. Bed-Rooms with Attendance, 2s and 2s 6d. Boarders from 25s.

There are at least a dozen marriages at Blair’s Hotel advertised in the Glasgow Herald in the year 1900. What name were you after?

I suspect there was more at 95 Renfield Street than the Hotel and the YWCA. In the 1890s there are adverts by an accountant, someone selling musical instruments, and someone else renting property.

Walmer Crescent and Walmer Terrace both appear often in the Glasgow Herald in the 1890s. They both seem to be at Ibrox, off Paisley Road. In 1899 there was railway construction in the vicinity.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Sarah,
I don't suppose you have any details of these families.
My mother lived here in the 1920s her maiden name was Bryson.
Thanks
Andy

Hello Andy and a warm [TS_welcome]

The surnames found at 6 Walmer Terrace in 1891 are:
Crawford
Creighton
Dyker
Kerr
Marshall
Sloan
Smith
Wallace
Waterstone

So, no Brysons. Do any of these names ring a bell? Must confess I don't know anything more about the families than was found on the censuses. Have you found the Brysons in the newly-released 1911 census? Were they already at that address then?

All the best,
Sarah

Thanks for the warm welcome and the info.
I have to admit that none of these names are familliar to me but it is early days yet.
As I said, my mother was living there in the 1920's so many occupants may have come and gone in that time.
I was adopted by her as a babe (I'm now in my 60th year) and know little about her side of the family.
About 15 years ago I began tracing my birth parents.
It's a long but (I hope) interesting story and I've written a book about it.
The book (I say book but it's only 90-odd pages) has been printed but I also have it as a PDF if anyone is interested.
I can forward a copy for your appraisal.
Just reply and I'll send you a copy.

Andy

Hello Andy,
If you get stuck trying to go backward with the Brysons or others, feel free to post your own topic with your questions. We all like a good puzzle!

Good for you for actually completing your book! I'm sure it's fascinating. I started out in genealogy trying to track down my mother's birth family from very few clues and have got completely hooked. One of these days I plan to write it all up, but I keep haring off after more clues and never quite get to the writing stage!

If anyone wants to take Andy up on his offer of a pdf, I would suggest you do so in a private message, to avoid posting email addresses on the public forum where the spam bots can find them.

All the best,
Sarah

Good point however I was going to P.M. any replies.
I know what you mean about getting hooked .... it's more addictive than cigarettes!!!
I would advise any members to go and talk to any elderly relatives.
Take a recording device with you because the history they can retell won't be found in any history book.
Once it's gone it will never be recoverable and it's priceless.
