The age is off a few years (if the Ancestry transcription can be trusted, as it can't) but the name is unusual and the Caithness birth...

One thing is sure is that the whole family has forgotten that James was born in Perth

So no wonder he wasn't to be found with that birthplace in the censuses.

Sorry, still searching away with my morning coffee

Given this family's disregard for accuracy in birth information, did we get the right James in 1901 before? But why suddenly Dalry, Ayrshire as a birth place? I'm guessing it's probably not him. But it would be a big help if we knew the names of James and Elizabeth's older children. How I wish one could do a parent search in the statutory records!

Anniee, do you know the names of any of the children besides your grandfather?

And what about the John Menzies McDonald born in Perth that Annette found earlier?

There is a small group of McDonalds all with the middle name Menzies in the Perth area. One actually turns up with Menzies for a first name on Ancestry.

This family takes a prize for being confusing!

Good for you, Annette,
I knew I should have verified the births that Andy posted but got lazy

So scratch that whole lot of censuses. We're back to square one with just one child born to James McDonald and Georgina Mulholland-- correct?

That being the James in 1868 in Perth (Carol, that was a mis-type of Annette's, it wasn't John but James)

Those were the 1871 and 1881 censuses that I had originally thought were James, where he is a boarder in households with other surnames.

Back to the drawing board,
