Del,
Do you know where in Ireland he was born? My wife's great grandfather died at sea 1918 He was a stoker and we believe his furthest voyage would be to Ireland as he was at home most nights, certainly he was in every Census. He was never registered in Scotland although he lived in Glasgow. His death was in the Registration of Deaths at Sea, we got it in the Mitchell Library Glasgow. It stated that the registration had to be at his place of birth, so his was in Northern Ireland.
Hope that might help
regards

Alcluith, He was born in 1865 in Co. Down, possibly in Downpatrick itself, it dosn't help that he was registered as "MALE" Clarke, I am pretty certain his parents were Bernard Clarke and Sarah Allan, his first son was named Samuel Allan Clarke. I cannot find anything on him since he was jailed in 1899, for the seriuos assault on his wife at Dundrum. Regards Del.

Re: Can't Find A Death
Del,
Snap on the County Down birth, you know he was jailed in 1899 and recorded as deceased in 1912 so you have a window of search for registration of death at sea so all you need is for some kind person visting the Mitchell in Glasgow to do a look up for you, a long shot but worth a try.

Re: Can't Find A Death
Alcluith, He wasn't a seafaring man, on all the certificates with his name on, he is given as a general labourer, of course, that doesn't mean that he didn't die at sea, thanks for the advice, I shall pursue it [somehow], Regards Del. P S. Just a thought, but Susannah, his wife, had two daughters by fathers unknown, the second one in 1910, where she is given as still married, but states that Samuel is NOT the father, so assuming that she knew he was still alive this narrows it down even further, to between 1910 and 1912, when she re-married. Re: Can't Find A Death
I had a look at the applications last time I was at The Mitchell but there was absolutely nothing for the children or the parents.nelmit wrote:Looks like the girls were taken away from their mother for whatever reason. I am fairly sure there will be a poorhouse application at The Mitchell and I'll have a look when I next go there although it may be some time.Orlaith17 wrote:Thanks for your help. By 1901, the family seemed to have been split up. The oldest son Owen was stayng with my great grandmother, his aunt,Catherine Scanlan in Dundee (1901 census) His four young sisters were staying in Banffshire.....no idea why. Ann McTaggart died in Dundee Royal infirmary on 12th September 1906. The fact the family was split up by 1901 makes me wonder what happened between Ann and her husband James mcTaggart.
Rathven have poorhouse minutes which may give info on when the girls arrived. http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Rath ... ml#PoorLaw
There are a few James McTaggart deaths indexed at SP if you widen his age range but hopefully a poorhouse application will reveal what happened to him.

Annette
I will keep their names and check again next time as I was really surprised at a zero result.

Annette

Del
Given the time have you looked in the "Ships List" or other sources to see if he emigrated ?
Maybe when he got out of Jail his wife wanted nothing to do with him so he decided to he moved away.
