Hi Lesley,

Thank you very much for that info, very useful to know....not overly handy....but at least we won't get our hopes up for finding an immediate answer if we go there. Good job cousin lives in Edinburgh!

Best wishes
Donna

Hello Donna,

Had a look at the Poorhouse applications today and I had no joy finding one for Catherine McKinnon.

What I did find was an application for Roderick's daughter from a previous marriage (can't find a marriage though) but it doesn't really help.

Date of application was 24.10.1866

Catherine McNeil, Robertson Lane.
Born - Braevick, Barra
single aged 24 servant
Pregnant 8 months

Dependants -Michael age 5 born Dunoon.
Mary born in poorhouse 12th December 1866.

Putative father of Michael, Patrick Lafferty, Pawnbroker vennel. States that she is pregnant by Robert McKay, miner residing at Wishaw.

Parents Roderick McNeil labourer and Mary McKinnon both deceased. Stepmother Catherine McKinnon residing at 6 Park Place, Paisley Road.

10/6/70 Pregnant by John McLuskey, Winchburgh???

There is quite a few addresses for her a couple of which coincide with the ones you've given previously.

It states she was sent back to Barra in 1870. but whether or not she stayed there is another story.

I had a glance at a couple made by Roderick McNeil's from Barra but discounted them. Now I know he was married 3 times I might look at them again. One was married to a Mary Gallocher. Although I think he was a sailor.

The police book wasn't there and when I asked about it nobody knew what I was talking about. :? I'm beginning to think I was havering but I know I'm not. Jack - help me out on this one please. :D
The archives don't hold anything relevent either.

Watch this space - just in case.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Annette,

That is fantastic information. It most definitely connects Roderick to a second marriage and gives more weight to that marriage cert from 1855, thank you!

Also gives me a name for one of the other wives, after all it's nice to know what my Gx3 grandfather was up to. I suspect the lack of finding a birth/marriage may be due to them being Catholic, I'm not sure if all Catholic records are available, apparently there was a falling out with the Church and from the 1860s they were Protestant.

As for the Mitchell, I have every faith in you and know you weren't havering, after all that's the place that told me there were no poor relief records for George Millar & Barbara Black and look how much you found for me.

Thank you so much.

Donna

71 Duke St etc...

The more we find out about this bunch, the less happy I am about them!

Will bear young Catherine in mind for the 1871 census, that might give us a few clues although maybe not if she's having weans by umpteen men...

Between West Register House and NRH I'm going to be a very busy little person hunting for this lot.

Donna - hurry up and win the lottery so we can invade NRH!

Hello Deborah,

At least you know the names of the fathers. :D

My gg gran had 8 children (that I am aware of).

1 illegitimate by a named reputed father
2 by a husband who left after about 4 years of marriage
5 illegitimate no father mentioned at all although the Kirk had something to say about 2 of them. So my maiden name was actually passed down from her maiden name.

The children were born over a 24 year period but no male partner has ever appeared on a census with her. :x

Kind regards,
Annette M

Ok Cuz :D , I'm trying, I'm trying...ok 5 lucky dips for Saturday it is!

Annette, I dread to think what the kirk sessions would say about this lot and the ones they married into had a few wee tales of their own to tell

Still it keeps us all out of mischief.....pity SP don't do shares...I've got more chance of making money on that than the lottery!
