We're slowly but surely getting there...............

How can I put it :?:

If you combine the info in this post with that in another recent post, then the answer should be obvious

Hi David

I see that Auntie Essie has made it into print as well as onto this DG!! She was a lovely lady and would, I'm sure, have been amused (if a bit embarrassed!) by all this publicity.

This is driving me daft!

I think the initials of the double barrelled name are S.E.

Therefore Sarah Elizabeth or something of that ilk.

Spot on!!, both in terms of the deduction and the expansion :!:

Give the lady a coconut (Dave, hiv wi goat oany?)

And the whole point of this? Just to ram home that a name doesn't necessarily bear any relation to what's listed in the books. Most times it will, but you will come across situations like this, and, probably more frequently, situations where a pet form is adopted but one normally associated with a different forename. I never quite found out why my mother was known as Bunty...........

When it comes to names, anything goes in Scotland.

I worked beside a teacher whose wife's name was Margaret, but everybody (including herself) called her June. A name with no family associations at all.

My wife has had 5 surnames (all perfectly explainable, and legal), 2 different birth certificates and has been married only once. That this is possible made it so much easier to work through my ancestors. I can claim only 3 different surnames, but then, men don't tend to change their names as often. English deed polls? Is nothing compared to Scotland.

Wecome to the Scottish name game!

How's this for a nickname?

Real name Duncan. Nickname - Nicky as a little boy, further shortened to Nick as he grew up.

How do you connect these together?

You'd never guess in a million years.

It's a pet name given to him by his Granny. Appparently when he was just a toddler and very small for his age, his Granny said "He wisnae the height o' a nicky tam"

So Duncan became Nick.

Prizes for those who know what a "nicky tam" is!!!

Ancestors names can get very confusing. My great grandmothers name was Wilhelmina, but I couldn't find her anywhere listed by that name.

Finally found her on the census records using the name Minnie. She was married twice.....on the first marriage she used the name Minnie and on the second she used the name Wilhelmina. Don't know why Wilhelmina would be changed to Minnie.
