Hi Anihana,
My mothers Aunt was married to a Thomson from Fetteresso, here is something for you to mull over:
Robert Thomson m. Margaret Philip, 1762 Maryculter
Children:
Robert Thomson 1795
James Thomson 1798
George Thomson 1801
Francis Thomson 1804 all b. Maryculter
Francis Thomson m. Mary Forbes 1862 Hill of Muchalls Kincardine, the family moved to Fetteresso.
Children were all born in Fetteresso.
I wonder if your George was maybe the brother of Francis, as his age would fit according to the census, I never did search for the siblings of Francis.
Have you looked for a Headstone at Fetteresso churchyard?
Ann

The 1841 Census of Fetteresso (FreeCen) has this:
Kempstone Hill
George Thomson 39 Agricultural Labourer
Ann " 34
Ann " 13
Alexander " 12
Elspet " 9
George " 7
James " 4
Joseph " 1
All were born within Kincardineshire.
ScotlandsPeople records a George Thomson born/baptised 25 Jan 1801 at Maryculter, Kincardineshire. It looks as if this is the correct person but I'll search the Death Index on SP to try and find him.

The 1851 census shows Ann aged 44 as the head of the household. I wonder therefore if George died somewhere between 1843 (when daughter Jane was born) and 1851. A look at that census on SP should show her as a widow if he did.Bervonian wrote:The 1841 Census of Fetteresso (FreeCen) has this:

BUT......Annette is right, he did die before the 1851 Census, SP only has deaths from 1855 onwards yeah? So did they not record deaths anywhere before then?
This is where I'm stuck....only way to know if that birth (and the parents shown on it) is him is to find a death record as that show's the parents usually yeah?
Cheers

Statutory Registration started in 1855: it was then a legal requirement to register births, marriages and deaths. Prior to that these events were recorded by individual parishes, though many parishes did not record deaths. Generally speaking, a pre-1855 death is very unlikely to mention a parent unless it is a very young child who has died. SeeBUT......Annette is right, he did die before the 1851 Census, SP only has deaths from 1855 onwards yeah? So did they not record deaths anywhere before then?

Hi Anihana,
Have you looked at this site www.mywebtiscali.co.uk, I visit here quite often, the man who runs it is Colin Milne, and you should visit his section on Graveyards, he has so much on the area around the North East of Scotland. It is worth a visit.

Sorry, this link must be his old address, I just save it in my favourites, try googling NE SCOTLAND and Colin Milne

Here's the link for Colin Milne's NE Scotland website. He's a wonderful person to work with. He located several of my relatives graves and sent me pictures!
