Crighton and Stewart in Kirriemuir, Angus

Post by mdurie » Mon Sep 24, 2007 2:51 pm

Help, please. I can't get past my great great grandparents Charles Crighton and Agnes Stewart. They both registered the birth of their son, James Crighton, born Kirriemuir 14 February 1857, and he appears in the 1861 census, age 4 and living in Kirriemuir with his uncle and his wife, George and Elizabeth Stewart. But no sign of Charles and/or Agnes anywhere. When he married Jane Kerr at Glamis 13 March 1879, James gave his parents as Charles and Agnes Stewart but there is no sign of any marriage, or indeed of anything at all relating toCharles and Agnes, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The online IGI lists James as James Crighton or Stewart. The implication from that is that the parents probably were not married.

All the best,

You could try starting with George and Elizabeth's marriage entry to get his parents names. Hopefully that would lead to a year of birth for his sister Agnes -or have you already tried that? An Agnes Stewart married in Kirriemuir in 1859.

What was the address given on the birth entry for James?

Charles would definitely be more difficult if not impossible, if they did not marry.

Kind regards,

Brilliant idea, Annette!

In 1851 there is:

Nether Balgray, Kingoldrum, Angus
Charles Crichton, 17, Servant, born Kirriemuir, Forfarshire, Ag Laborer

In 1861, possibly the same person is a Ploughman in Kirriemuir:

Millhall Bothy, Kirriemuir, Angus
Charles Crighton, 25, Fellow Servant, born Kirriemuir, Forfarshire, Ploughman

What occupation did Charles give on the birth certificate of his son James?

All the best,
Sarah

Thank you so much, everyone, I now feel as though I'm getting somewhere.

It looks like "uncle" George Stewart was in fact grandfather. From what I've found today, Agnes Stewart was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Stewart, ms Soutar. (Soutar is my uncle's middle name, but I didn't know where it came from.) I haven't found her birth certificate yet (I'll try Agnes Soutar), but she married Robert Robertson in Kirriemuir 28 November 1860, so would have been born 1839/40. If George Stewart turns out to be her real father, then he waas born at Tannadice 20 August 1807, son of George Stewart and Agnes Millar.

Charles Crighton may well be the one who married Mary Spence at Tannadice in 1857, I have that certificate but still have a lot to do there too.

Many thanks,
Margaret

Is is also the case for the "niece" Mary Lenton, age 6 in the 1861 household. She appears to be the daughter of George's daughter Elizabeth
