Hi Gillian

You will probably get as many answers as there are days in a week - or a month. If you can find 1 site with everything - all British records - do let me know.

I currently use 3 sites
Ancestry UK - subscription - England/Wales Census & BDM - various other records including Scotland Census transcriptions

Familyhistoryonline - credits - parish Records England - but they are being taken over by findmypast which is another subscription site

ScotlandsPeople credits - if you want images of Scottish census data and BDMs available from an online source SP is the only site that has them. The IGI (free) has many church records and civil indexes to 1875. If you visit LDS centres you can order films from them for a small fee. Ancestry has not very good transcriptions of the census data, but no images.

I have never found any Irish records (or sites for same) that have my folks, which is not surprising as they were very confused as to their origins before arriving in Australia.

You can also order copies of original documents through the mail:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... ReqIGI.ASP

Just be aware that the 'original document' might be a form submitted by a church member, but these can be interesting as well. :-)

Hi, a couple of good irish websites i have found are
www.ulsterancestry.com
www.emeraldancestors.com
I found a bit of my information from these and it never cost me a penny, just a bit of detective work. good luck. :D
