Can anyone please help in reading this cause of death?

Post by JulieAK » Fri Oct 12, 2007 1:38 am

I've tried all the usual genealogical causes-of-death lists but this one has me stumped.

The first word looks like Angina but the second word is ?? It's a 19 month old baby who died in Glasgow in 1861.

I have read that Angina in those days referred to the Latin? meaning of constriction (not necessarily to do with the heart) so it might have something to do with choking.

Cause of death is in the last column.

Any help much appreciated. Thank you.

Wow Andrew. Brilliant! That looks like it. The 'm's and the 'b' are consistent with the rest of the document.

I googled that term and found it's basically Croup. It seems highly likely as respiratory related deaths decimated this family. Another sibling also died of Croup aged 16 months. That one was 1875 and then they just wrote Croup on the death certificate.

Thank you very much.

To me it looks like Frombeaucis - could it be a misspelling of Thrombosis? Just a guess though :I'm not a doctor, so I'm not sure if that would make sense.

Hi Julie

Your cause of death(second part) may be Bronchiectasis

Dilation of the airways. Usually results from Pneumionia in childhood.

Thanks Sheila and Rosie.

I thought it looked like thrombosis initially but that makes no sense to me after "angina".

It's very likely though it is something to do with the airways. There is a term "angina membranacea" in the historical medical literature so I'm liking that one.
