Working backwards, my Daniel Johnstone died at the age of 84 and was keeper of the Carstairs Junction Hotel for many years. His parents were John Johnstone, farmer and Mary Robertson. Census records suggest he was born in Bothwell around 1817.
And the records do show show a Daniel Johnstone born in 1817, his father was John Johnstone and his mother name was Mary. But unfortunately this Daniel was born in Greenock, Renfrew and his mother maiden name was Macallum.
I've run out of ideas at the moment and not sure where to go next so I thought I would consult the 'Forum'
And in anticipation, thanks
The wrong Daniel Johnstone

Hi again,
I think Annette is right about the female births in the online IGI. However, the males should still be there in the OPRs on the Scotlands People website and I see no sign of him. Is it possible that the family did not belong to the Church of Scotland?
After a rummage around in Ancestry.com, I have to admit that he is a fascinating person! In 1871 he was a Wotel Keeper, according to the Ancestry index, and had suddenly got younger and changed his name to David
Did Daniel and Margaret ever have any children? They seem to have a good number of nieces and nephews living with them (as well as a "Deveral Srvt"
)
Carstairs P?? Holet, Carstairs, Lanarkshire
David Johnstone, 35, Head, born Bothwell, Lanark, Wotel Keeper
Margaret Johnstone, 44, Wife, born Mofford, Dumfrieshire
Bell Johnstone, 22, Niece, born Bothwell, Dumfries, Dressmaker
Catherine Johnstone, 18, Niece, born Bothwell, Dumfries, Waitress
Jean Johnstone, 12, Niece, born Newmarkland, Dumfries, Scholar
Andrew Johnstone, 7, Nephew, born Newmarkland, Dumfries, Scholar
Maggie Cotton, 23, Servant, born Newmarkland, Dumfries, Deveral Srvt
All the best,
Sarah

In 1851, Daniel the engineer (i.e. probably the one I found in 1841) has married Margaret born in Dumfries (which works with the hotel keeper in Carstairs)
1851
Holytown Bridge 34, Mossend Iron Works, Bothwell, Lanarkshire
Daniel Johnston, 30, born Johnston Hill, Lanark, Engineer
Margaret Johnston, 25, Wife, born Lockerby, Dumfries
Daniel Johnston, 2, Son, born Bothwell, Lanark
Hmmm. This is interesting. In 1861 Margaret is the head of household. No sign of Daniel/David. Do You know where he was?
Carstairs Junction Hotel, Carstairs, Lanarkshire
Margaret Johnston, 37, Head, born Dunfield, Dumfriesshire, Hotel Keeper
Grace Goldie, 19, Servant, born Dalserf, Dumfriesshire, Domestic Servant
Thomas May, 33, Boarder, born Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire, Engen Fitter
I know you probably already have the censuses, but I am a compulsive census-looker-upper and can't help it

Hi Annette, nelmit wrote:I'm sure somebody else will confirm (or not) that Bothwell was one of those areas where only female births/christenings were recorded by the LDS.
A look at batches C116252 and C116254 show that Bothwell is indeed one where only the female births/christenings are to be found in the online version of the IGI.
All the best,

Daniel Johnstone
Thanks to all who replied to my query, especially Sarah
I had all the census records except for 1861, so that was a great addition. Daniel and Margaret Johnstone did have a son Daniel but he died aged 8 in 1855.
Whoever transcribed the 1871 census record was obviously getting tired. I downloaded my copy via Scotlandspeople, I know it does help if you know what you are looking for. BUT, it was Daniel, not David Johnstone and he was 53 not 35. Also it was Jeanie and Andrew Gray not Johnstone, both from New Monksland, Lanarkshire
Anyway, you have given me food for thought
