Help deciphering death cert please

Post by ellenavon » Sun Oct 28, 2007 12:39 pm

Hi everyone

Would appreciate your input on the content of the death cert for Donald MacLean which I think  I have uploaded to the gallery.

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1417

(Before anyone says - yes I have sent a contact form to SP - but I'm too impatient to wait!)

The darling man, b. c 1764 lived to age 96.

The bit I'm struggling with most is his father's christian name.

As I read it, its

Donald MacLean, Crofter, Widower, 08 Oct 1860, M, 96yrs, F = (Neil???) MacLean, Tenant, deceased, M = Effie MacLean ms Ferguson, Cause of death Unknown, No Medical Attendant, Kilmuir, North Uist, as certified by Archibald Robertson, son in law of deceased. Informant, Archibald Robertson, His Mark, Son in Law, present, (Can't read whats under that), Registered on 13 Oct 1860 @ ??, Donald McLean (?) registrar.

Any offerings gladly accepted!

Many thanks

Ellen.

Hi Ellen,

You have set a challenge with this one. Hopefully SP will send you a fresh scan from the register that will be much more legible.
  • Neil is probaby right for the father's first name.
  • Archibald Robertson, His X Mark, Son in Law, present, Donald MacDonald, Registrar, Witness.
  • Registered on 13th October 1860 at Kylis Paible by Donald MacDonald, Registrar.
Some of these are found by comparing to the entries above Donald's.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew.

Have found Kyles Paible mentioned in Bill Lawson's Croft Histories, so that makes sense.

Having difficulty finding Kilmuir Burial Ground, North Uist though. Most of the google references are for Kilmuir Burial Ground, Skye, where Flora MacDonald is buried.

I do have map co-ordinate for the Uist one from google, but have no idea how to use them  NF 7080 7055 - can anyone help please?

Cheers

Ellen.

NB - I'm now inclined to think the date of death is the ninth, not the eighth.

Hi Ellen,

Go to http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/

Click on I want to Get a map now

In the search box, input NF70807055 (no spaces between the segments).

I was within 100 yards of that cemetery earlier this year when I visited the Balranald Bird Sanctuary at Hogarry (Gaeilc: Hogha Gearraidh) while touring Barra and the Uists.

Kylis Paible (Gaeilc: Caolas Phaibeil) can be found by the same method at NF75036712 - a few miles SE of the cemetery.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Ellen

Recognized you instantly from your avatar. very Fetching :D

I think I have dealt with this Registrar before in my rellies. He spells Neil as 'Niel' consistently and Effy with a 'y' rather than 'ie'
I agree with Andrew but hope the record you have sent for is a whole lot better than the current one. He must have been diluting the ink

Hi Russell

Just a little number I picked up for the occasion!

I know - this is a shocker of a cert! But I was just so thrilled that the old boy hung on until 1860. I'm fairly sure that this is my hubby's 4 x great grandad. Just a little bit more cross checking of siblings etc to be 100%. Chuffed to bits. In spite of the writing and spellings!

What surnames do you have in Uist? We may even have a connection somewhere. It's not such a big place after all.

Cheers

Hi Ellen

My North Uist lot are Mackenzies and McAulays
Henrietta McKenzie b c 1851 m Alex Morton 1873.
Her parents were Alexander b 1812 Balemartin and Marion McAulay b c 1809 Ceallan.
Henrietta's siblings were
Marion b c 1833
Rory b c 1835
Mary b c 1837
Barbra b c 1840
Euphemia b c 1845
We have only managed to go back to her grandparents. Before that there don't appear to be any written records.

Who knows. We might be related :D
