William Ramsay from Tarves.....

Post by Jim » Sat Jun 18, 2005 9:34 pm

I've hit a brick wall in my research on William Ramsay born abt 1819. He married Helen Laing in 1840 at Belhelvie and the OPR shows he was from Tarves. I found them in the 1841 Aberdeen census living at Catto Square with 4mo. old daughter, Helen. William, a Grocer, is shown as being 22 yrs of age. My gt grandfather, Alexander Ramsay was born at Belhelvie in 1843 and from thereon I haven't been able to find any record of his father, William. In the 1851 & 1861 Belhelvie census' provided to me he is not with the family. I haven't had access to those census records yet for other areas. Helen Laing Ramsay died at Eggie, Belhelvie in 1864 and her death record shows she was married to William Ramsay. Their daughter, Helen's marriage record in 1865 states her father, William Ramsay, Merchant, deceased. I don't see any death records for a William between this time period. Any suggestions how I might trace William Ramsay to find out where he was from or who his parents were and what happed to him.

Hi Jim.

I don't suppose he's related to the William Ramsey & Isabella Ramsey (nee Rae) who died Dec. 5 1858 age 38 in Tradeston, Glasgow.

Dennis, the William Ramsay who died in 1958 is a good possibility. It said he was married but not to who he was married. He would have been born in 1820....very close to the birth date shown in the 1841 census.
Thanks for your reply....It's a good chance this might be him. Jim

Hi Jim

I don't think your William Ramsay and mine are related but you never know. After my GGG Grandfather (William Ramsay) the next I have is William Ramsay born 1806 again in Scoonie, Fife. I am still researching this line as it gave me huge headaches so if I come up with anyone I think might be yours I will let you know.

Happy Hunting
