Hi,
I have a birth record that reads 'Illegitimate' under the name; however, in the column to the left there is what looks like an oval stamp RCE? and in the center is written by hand 'Legitimation'.

Hi Dennis,
This probably means that the parents married, and showed that they were both free to marry at the time of conception. In Scots law, that can ligitimise a child born before marriage of the parents.
If you got the certificate on ScotlandsPeople, the RCE document should be available to you for another two credits.
All the best,
AndrewP
