I have a bit of a brick wall, I hope someone will be kind enough to help me.
I have the birth cert of my Great Grandfather, George Brownlie b. 29.4.1872 in Dykehead, Shotts. Birth registered in Calderhead.
It lists his parents as John Brownlie & Janet Brownlie, m.s. Brownlie, being married in November 1854 in Wishaw.
I cannot find this marriage which would have given me John & Janet's parents names etc.
Someone kindly found this family on the 1871 Census for me as John Brownlie aged 38 b. East Calder & Janet Brownlie 36, b. Shotts with their family. I have looked for John's birth but I just can't be sure.
I have tried Scotlandspeople & the IGI but nothing is coming up.
Any help or advice would be most welcome.
Many Thanks
Katherine

Hi Katherine
The IGI shows a number of children to John and Janet Brownlie/Brownlee:
Jane Brownlie, 12 Oct 1855, Cambusnethan
Thomas Brownlie, 06 Nov 1857, Cambusnethan
William Brownlie, 03 Dec 1859, Cambusnethan
Janet Brownlie, 26 Jul 1865, Shotts
Jane Brownlee, 15 Jan 1868, Calderhead
Elisabeth Brownlee, 04 Nov 1869, Livingston, West Lothian
George Brownlie, 29 Apr 1872, Calderhead
James and Robert Brownlie, 10 Feb 1874, Cambusnethan
A quick look at Jane b. 1855's birth cert on SP confirms the parents marraige as 1854 Wishaw, but no further details on it.
Father - John Brownlie, age 22, Coal Miner, b. West Calder, Mother - Janet Brownlie ms Brownlie, age 20, b. Dykehead, Parish of Shotts, her 1st child.
As the marraige is pre 1855, you are most unlikely to obtain the parents names from the OPR entry in any case.
I would start by searching for their deaths. Janet would be the best bet. Remember to use wildcards to capture all possible spellings of Brownlie/Brownlee.
If you send me your e mail address by personal message, I will forward on the copy of Jane's b cert.
Regards
Ellen.

If John and Janet were married before 1855 it is unlikely their parents names will be recorded in the OPR.
John and Janet had a number of children including a daughter Jane who was born in 1855. A look at this will give you more accurate ages and places of birth for them.
It also looks as though John married again in 1874 to an Agnes Grant. If this is your John then his parents details will be given on the marriage entry.
And a look for Janet's death between 1872 and 1874 ahould hopefully find her details.

Hi All,
Just to add to my post of 13th November.
I found John Brownlie & Agnes Grant's marriage 23rd October 1874. Cambusnethan. John 39, a Widower & Agnes, 34, a spinster.
It lists his parents as Thomas Brownlie (deceased) & Margaret Johnston (deceased)
Do you have any advice on finding their marriage etc? It would be much appreciated.
I took your advice & found what I think is Janet's death in 1974 Aged 38
in Cambusnethan. Sadly I ran out of credits so could not check. I just put in Janet Brownlie m.s.Brownlie 1874 and it came up.
I then checked for deaths of her twins, as they were not on the 1881 census with John & Agnes. James b. 10th Feb 1874 & Robert b. 10th Feb 1874 and hey presto they came up as died in 1874. So, it looks to me like she died either giving birth or shortly afterwards. I will check that all out though when I get more credits.
Thank you all so much for helping me find this information.
Regards
Katherine
