I would appreciate some feedback and thoughts on this Birth Record Dilema.....
This is all I have to go on.......On my G Grandfathers marriage record (Belfast) in 1891 his full name is given as Thomas Beattie Scott, occupation, Clerk & his age is given as full. His father is Thomas Scott and his occupation was Manager. It does not record his Mothers name.
On both the 1901 & 1911 Irish Census, Thomas states he was born in Scotland. Thomas died in 1951 and his death records his age as 85. Well..... I have spent a fair amount of time & money looking through all the birth records for Thomas Scotts born between 1865 & 1869 and have found nothing that matched.
I have checked the Scottish Census for all Thomas Scotts and found a promising one in 1871 in Peebles .... Thomas B Scott. I then went back to Scotlands People looking for a birth record but couldn't find one that matched so I entered the parents of the Thomas B Scott that I found on the 1871 Census onto the IGI's and came up with an unnamed baby Scott that matched the parents and dates, so.......... (sorry for going on) it was back to Scotlands People to Check out the Birth and marriage of the parents. On Scotlands People I found that the baby Scott was not named either. I then phoned the GRO in Edinburgh and spoke to someone who checked this out for me and confirmed that this child had never had his name added!
Has anyone else come across a situation like this?
Would I be foolish to assume that this could be my G Grandfather?
I have checked further through the family and found that Thomas Beattie Scotts G Grandmother (who died young) was named Beattie.
I did find a Thomas Beattie Scott, born in Castleton, Rox, in 1871. I followed this one through the Census and it is definately not him!
What would you think?

Can I suppose that this is my G Grandfather?

Hi Lezlibangor,
The first thing I'd do with this unnamed baby Scott is to check for an unnamed Scott death registration with the same parents on or shortly after the birth registration.
I have a few unnamed babies in my line and they all died very soon after birth.
If you find one, at least that would discount the BC you've found and let you continue.

Another thing I'd advise is that you widen your year range for his death. Even very close relatives can get ages wrong during the stressful event of registering a death.

Hello Lezlibangor,
If you haven’t tried this before you could go to Hugh Wallis’s Middle Name site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... #PageTitle
Select each of the Counties in turn, click on “B” then on Baillie and/or close variations and see if there are any Scott’s in the results.
e.g. Roxburgh brings up John 1852, John 1858, Andrew 1860, Walter 1861, William 1869, Thomas 1871. These you probably know about.
If you search the other Counties you may find other “Beattie Scott” concentrations of births around the same time period. Note down all the results (at least 20yrs either side of 1865) and then check them on the IGI for parentage etc.
Doing this might provide you with a clue if not necessarily a Thomas.
Hope this helps,
Alan
