Hello and welcome to Talking Scot.
You won't find info on your father's birth or death online.
If you stay in Scotland you can book in at
Park Circus or
NRH and look up the info yourself.
Kind regards,
Annette M

There is a death of a John McDow
ell in 1945 in Lanark(shire), but not Shotts, indexed at
Scotlands People a pay per view site.
There are 3 other John McDow*ll's in the same year but not Lanarkshire.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Annette M

Hi cheakyj
..and welcome to Talking Scot
If you are not based in Scotland and cannot go to Edinburgh or Glasgow, you can still apply for a copy of a of a recent birth or death entry from GROS. See:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/f ... aflet2.pdf
Best wishes
Lesley

I have a copy of johns Death Registration and cause of death recorded in Shotts This is where I seem to come unstuck.
John was married twice the first time to Ann Robertson they had 2 children Agnus born 1905? and Lydia 1911 and the second was to Marion Mitchell who was William A M Mcdowell my fathers mother I dont think there was a birth certificate for my father as he never seemed to have one around. Could there be any school records about then that I could check. I seem to be going round in circles and getting nowhere

Hi there
By locating the death of John's first wife you'll confirm that it's likely your William was not born
before that date. That said it doesn't help you much for an online search as the modern indexes aren't open for business just yet. I heard on BBC radio yesterday a prediction that they may come online next week. When they are available you should easily find a birth recorded in 1916 that could be William's....but the only way to obtain it is to follow the advice previously given....visit New Register House or Park Circus in person....or write to GROS and pay for an extract....or hire a researcher to get it for you......or beg for SKS who might be going there to have a peek.

That's it. There will be no way to confirm the birth without viewing the further details contained in the registration.
Best wishes
Jean

Hello again,
There is no obvious marriage for John and Marion Mitchell.
Does it say on his death certificate that he had been married to both women?
Perhaps your dad was illegitimate and registered under the name of Mitchell. Either way to find his birth certificate you will have to visit a family history centre in Scotland or, as Lesley said, contact GROS giving the information you have and they will find it for you.
If it's your family history you are trying to research then you have a start with John as his parents should be shown on the death certificate.
There is a death record on SP in 1951 for a Mary McDowell/Mitchell born 1883. Could this be your gran?
regards,
Annette M
