suggestion as to which one?

Post by dmd1164 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 9:45 pm

Further assistance please?

I have a John Grant in my tree - born 1807 in Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland along with his siblings. Parents I have are Isaac Grant and Jean Gauld married 1806, however when I go to LDS & SP sites I come up with 2 marriages - same year and in Aberdeen.

I'm assuming the Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland is the correct one, however.....I've been unable to verify where Isaac was born.

The 2nd marriage is a day later .....20 DEC 1806 Tarland And Migvie, Aberdeen, Scotland, and when I've searched for a birth record for Jean Gauld - I come up with several including

8. JEAN GAULD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 08 NOV 1773 Tarland And Migvie, Aberdeen, Scotland - which matches the marriage place for the 2nd marriage record. (This would make her 34 when she had her 1st child - I would think a bit old for a 1st back then????)

There is another Jean Gauld - 19 DEC 1782 Tarland And Migvie, Aberdeen, Scotland (which would make her 25)

Are these areas close??

Any suggestions??

Regards
Donna

Hi Donna,

I take it the IGI entries you are looking at are as follows.

ISAAC GRANT / JEAN GAULD - Marriage: 19 DEC 1806 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
ISAAC GRANT / JEAN GAULD - Marriage: 20 DEC 1806 Tarland And Migvie, Aberdeen, Scotland

JOHN GRANT - Christening: 28 SEP 1807 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
GEORGE GRANT - Christening: 21 FEB 1809 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
WILLIAM GRANT - Christening: 11 FEB 1811 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
ELIZABETH GRANT - Christening: 03 MAR 1813 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
ANN GRANT - Christening: 18 DEC 1814 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
HELEN GRANT - Christening: 02 MAR 1817 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
MARY GRANT - Christening: 04 NOV 1821 Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland

It is most likely that both marriage entries are for that couple. Rather than the marriage, they are probably for the calling of the banns in the home parish for each of them. A read of the OPR pages on ScotlandsPeople would probably show this. The two parishes were adjoining one another.

As for the parents of the couple - did either of them survive to at least 1855 in Scotland? If so, their death certificates should reveal their parents' names and hopefully lead to finding birth entries in the OPRs.

All the best,

AndrewP

No wonder I'm confused if they record the marriage twice.....

Will look further for the death certs.

Also - just another question. On the more modern day death certificates - do they list the known children of that person??

Reason I'm asking = my great grandmother (Agnes Meikle Moore) passed away in 1982, I remember my grandfather William (b 1921), (he raised me) said that he had 2 half sisters, well I've established that 1 sister was in fact a full sister born 5 years after him. I'm fairly sure that there was another born later. Because the photo we have dad (granddad) referred to the lady's daughter as his niece, which would mean the mother would have to be a sister or at least a half sister to him. The niece bears a remarkable resemblance to me at the same age......we could almost pass as twins back then.

The childborn in 1926 did not marry no did she have children.

Agnes married David Wilson Dickson, David followed the family out to Australia and is buried in Gympie Qld. I believe Agnes 'lived' with a chap with the surname Bett or Betts (also now deceased). I don't know that Agnes & David actually divorced though.

William ran away from home when he was 12 or 14 and went to live with his grandparents so I'm assuming that if there was a third child to Agnes - she would have been born sometime around 1933 or 1935.

Regards
Donna

Dad was born in 1921 and passed away in 1989, the 2nd child born 1926 - and we've established that she's still alive, possibly in a nursing home around Polbeth.

John Grant

Post by Maggie1904 » Wed May 16, 2012 6:16 pm

I too am looking for a John Grant. This one married Helen McPherson 12 Jan 1812 in Logie Coldstone. The couple had 11 children that I know of. I found Helen (born abt 1790) on the 1861 census in Kincardine O'Neil. She is a widow. I cannot find the family on the 1841 or 1851 census - can anyone help with this?

The only reference to this family I have seen is on a website and suggests John was born 1766 but no source is cited. Any information about John or the family will be greatly appreciated.
