Death certificate help

Post by elisabeth » Thu Jan 24, 2008 2:54 pm

Can anyone help me find a death certificate for Agnes McFarlane, born about 1832 in Dunning?

Agnes/ Anne was on the 1841 and 1851 Alva census with my great great grandfather Duncan McFarlane (she is described as his niece in 1851).She married John Melrose in 1852 in Alva, according to the 1855 birth certificate for her daughter. I can trace Agnes and John (no children survived) up to 1891 when they are in Inglis Green, Edinburgh. John died in Edinburgh in 1891 and I can't find Agnes on the 1901 census. There are no matches at all on Scotlandspeople for any variation of “Melrose/McFarlane” born 1830 +/-10.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated as finding Agnes’s parents might help me find the mother of Duncan McFarlane . His death certificate only gave his father, Dougal McFarlane. I have already checked the death certificate for an Agnes Melrose (no other surname) age 59 who died in East Lothian in 1891 and it’s not her.

Thanks,
Elisabeth

Sorry Elisabeth, but I can't find her either

I've tried all the usual wildcard combinations and got nowhere. Hopefully, someone else will have better luck.

Agnes McFarlane in 1901?

Post by Jack » Fri Jan 25, 2008 12:53 am

Hi Elisabeth and Mary,
This may be a bit of a red herring...but no harm in knowing of the lady.
I'd enough credits to check SP as i don't trust Ancestry (who have Agnes as a wife aged 57).
Such a pity it doesn't say where in Perthshire...
--
1901 cens 685-2 Ed 98 p 14 (Edinburgh - St Andrew)
37a Cumberland St.
William Mackie, head, widower, 56, Joinery Blacksmith, b Edinburgh, MLN
Agnes MacFarlane, ---, widow, 67, -------- b Perthshire.
...[relationship is blank]
--
In 1881 there's a likely looking William Mackie (36) blacksmith & wife Ann (43) born Thurso.
And 1891 as William S. Mackie (47) blacksmith & wife Ann (50) born Thurso.
But not together in 1901.
Looks like this William was previously married to a Catherine Middlemass before Ann.

ps later,
Or is this the above Agnes in Dalkeith 1891?

Wm. McFarlane, head, 46, Rope maker, b Perth, Perthshire.
Agnes McFarlane, wife, 56, born Kincardine, Perthshire.

pps later again,
If it is, then the above Wm. seems to be with a different wife in Dalkeith 1901.

William McFarlane, head, 57, Ropemaker Foreman, b Perth, Perthshire.
Ursula McFarlane, wife, 56, ------------------b Unst, Shetland.

--
ppps later yet,
Glad to say the Kincardine born Agnes McFarlane in 1891 is not the Agnes in 1901.
Her maiden name was Gray, and she died in Dalkeith as aged 63 in 1896.
So still the slim hope that it could be the right lady in 1901.
But like yourselves, i'm not seeing Dunning born Agnes's DC either.

I feel that the Agnes MacFarlane you found on the 1901 census, Jack, may well be her as she doesn't seem to appear on any previous census under this surname and you've eliminated the one born in Kincardine.

I've searched on Scotlandspeople for "A*n* M*c F?r*" deaths with no other surname after 1891 and the only ones in Edinburgh all have another surname which isn't Melrose.

I'm beginning to think that, even if I find her death certificate, the informant won't have known who her parents were, since she had no relatives in Edinburgh. However that doesn't stop it niggling that she just seems to have disappeared!
Thank you to both of you for your efforts.

Elisabeth

I know the feeling

It took me ages to find one of mine (and still not ABSOLUTELY positive) because the informant knew very little about him. He's shown in my records with question marks - and, yes, it does niggle

Hi Elizabeth,

Have you had a look at the Perth Newspaper Index cards on Ancestry. There are a bunch of Agnes McFarlane/MacFarlanes, one Dugal and half a dozen Duncans, all in the 1800's starting from 1827. Most of these are obituary notices, but there are several advert listing from an auctioneer too! The information on the cards is pretty lean, but you might recognize some of these people.

Carol
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the suggestion-next time I have some credits on Ancestry, I'll have a look.

My great great grandfather Duncan McFarlane was born in Stirling in 1823, so I'm not sure if I should be looking in Dunning or Stirling for Dougal McFarlane. Dunning Parish Historical Society has graveyard inscriptions and the 1841 to 1891 census online but I can't find any connection to the only Dougall McFarlane mentioned there (who died 1874, age 74) .

Since Duncan McFarlane was the head of the house in Alva in 1841 at the age of 18 and he had his 8 year old niece Agnes and her 10 year old sister Mary with him, I'm assuming that none of their parents were still alive. (no trace of Mary after 1841)

When I discovered Agnes McFarlane's married name, I really thought it was the breakthrough I needed. I should have known better!

Elisabeth
