Hi Helen
A couple of questions...
What i would like to find out is, They had 6 children first two are the ones bothering me as i cant seem to find a death for the first.
Does that mean you found a death for the second one? When was this?

Where were all these children born? What area of Scotland are we in?

If two successive children are given the same name it does perhaps imply that the first one died, but it is not always the case...

Best wishes
Lesley

Also don't take
David Young Brn: 24th April 1784
William Young Brn: 24th April 1784 obviously twins
this as gospel. I was astounded to find my GGGreat-Grandmother giving birth to at least seven children. Then I looked again it was the Christening date & not the Birth date-must have been a BOG offer that day.
In my experience when a child is named the same as a previous sibling it usually means the previous one has died. This is not alway the case as Lesley said.If both Grandfathers are named William you may have two sons named William-it has happened!
It can often explain an age which doesn't seem to match eg William one born 1840 dies 1842,2nd William is born 1849.
He marries in 1870 & gives his age as 21 which is correct but you are expecting 30.Even worse when the margin is less & the births are not recorded or one is & it's the one who died.
