PS - I took a peek at his death certificate. His mother's maiden surname is not much clearer there either. It looks like it may be McCrossery.

Hi Dennis
I can't really see the image very clearly as it is so small but I can see:
Alexander Bowes, ___ ____ cutter (journeyman)

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley:)

Vista isn't letting me dl the image directly from SP so I had to use another app 'captureWiz' to extract the part I needed from a smaller image. I just enlarge the image to see it in a 'normal' size. I sent off a contact form re William's mom's maiden name.

This looks as though it could be her brother in 1881.

Some of my lot worked as boot top cutters for R & J Dick at the Greenhead factory at that time, just off Glasgow Green, which may have been a possible place where Alexander Bowes might have worked. They made synthetic shoes from guttapercha resin, hence the word "gutties". There's a bit about the firm on my family history website at http://chrispatonscotland.tripod.com/id63.html . My great uncle William Paton and my great great uncle Joseph Woodroffe Paton both worked as boot top cutters for the firm. When William was laid off in the late 1920s he set up his own cobbling business.

My great grandfather started there with the firm on an apprenticeship in the early 1880s, and ended up managing three shoe shops for them in Brussels, Belgium, but he sadly lost his life after a year and a half into the war whilst hiding from the Germans, who had started interning British civilians at the start of the war. The Mitchell Library does not hold many records on the firm, mainly just AGM papers, though I did find a record of my great granddad's death in these during a discussion by the company on how the war was affecting their continental assets. There is a book though, called "100 Years of Guttapercha", which deals with the firm's history.

Hope this might help! :)

Hi:)

SP sent me a re-scanned image of William's DC and although the image is better I can't find anything on his mother. When William married in 1883 his dad was deceased but not his mother. Also, There's an 1891 census for William & Agnes an their brood but not for 1901.

Hi Dennis,

Looks like his surname is indexed as Gaudie in 1901.
