Hello Katrina42,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]
If you go to the Scotland's People site (link at the top of this page) and search under Statutory Register Births for John Brown Muir born Camlachie, Lanark, there is one in 1912. Could this be your grandfather? If so, you can register and pay to download the birth certificate. The parents' names should be mentioned and then we can take it back from there!

Looking forward to going backwards with this family :D

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Katrina42,

A warm welcome to TalkingScot from me too :)

Unless I'm mistaken, I think Sarah might have meant to say that you can download images from Scotlands People for births from 1855 to 1907, but anything after that date, you can order the image for a fee. Good luck :!:

Regards,
Anne H

Yes, sorry. My mistake... I forgot we were only in 2008!
So, either you can wait 4 years until the 1912 images come online... or you can order it by regular mail!
Sorry for the confusion, I'm trying to pack for a trip and shouldn't have been posting while I was distracted!

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Katie,
Any chance you will get up to Edinburgh or Glasgow in the near future? If so, you could view the certificate and make sure. Although, come to think of it, it would probably cost more to make the trip!

To clarify, how will you know if it is the right one? Do you have a birth date as well as a year? Do you have any idea what his parents' names might have been, the father's occupation, or the address where they were living?
Any idea if he was the eldest child or one of the younger ones? Perhaps the family is already in Camlachie in 1901.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Katrina,
What a shame that the date is too recent for you to view directly online.
I see that you are in Dumfriesshire. Would it be possible for you to get into Edinburgh to General Register House for a day or part of a day. It is £10 from 1.00 to 4.30 p.m and in this way you would avoid shelling out £10 for any mistake. At least I think that I am correct in saying that as I have been lucky enough not to have needed more recent certificates yet. You would be able to view the results of your search there and then and perhaps get back even further during the afternoon.
All the best in your search,
Rae
p.s If anything I have suggested here is wrong someone else will be able to guide you.
oops! Sarah and I have been compiling an answer at the same time.
