Post by Morag » Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:39 pm

Hi

I am looking for help in deciphering the maiden name of Alexander's mother - I have worked out the rest of it . Scotlands People have already rescanned and sent me a better copy . I would like it to be Milwain !

I think I have uploaded the image - but not sure as is the first time I have done this !

Thanks
Morag

Don't know what I've done - but I have since answered my own question anyway ! She wasn't who I wanted - I was looking for a Mary Milwain , and this one was Mary Milner !
Thanks anyone who tried looking

Hi Morag,

The image should be there now (although looks like it is no longer required).

Thanks Andrew

I mangaged to find what I wanted by checking the IGi ( don't know why I didn't before ) Unfortunately it wasn't the Alexander Wilson I was looking for - similar dates , place of birth & parents names !
Mine was alive in 1841 age 30 , living with his mother. After that I don't know - and the name is relatively common , so could be anywhere. Both his brothers ended up in Dumbarton , but his sisters all stayed in Wigtownshire.
Anyway , I will keep looking - thanks for your help

Looks like Milnay to me. If it were me, I'm not too sure I'd be dumping this Alexander just yet. Firstly, because I never trust the IGI and secondly because the names Milnay and Milnwain seem far too similar to me when said out loud.

Remember, the daughter who is the death informant tells the registrar the names, the registrar writes down what heard...or what he thinks he heard....

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

Thanks for that advice - I rarely throw anything away if it sounds possible !
My Alexander is with his mother in 1841 in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire and the other one seems to be married and living with his wife in Glasgow - so at best they may be cousins.
These Wilsons seem to be unsure of their geography - places of birth vary between Ireland and South West Scotland on a regular basis - so there must have been a lot of travelling between the two places. Just to confuse things further they also have used a reverse naming pattern eg 1st son after mothers father, 1st daughter after fathers mother etc - this happened over several generations.Needless to say they are my husbands lot and not mine !
Anyway , thanks for everyone's help.
