Macleod regitered in Muckairn

Post by utrecht003 » Fri Aug 01, 2008 4:26 pm

My grandfather Alexander Macleod was born 1868 in a place called Clasgarraig. The birth was registered in the parish of Muckairn, Argyle. Has anyone else heard of Clascarraig or where it was in relation to Muckairn? I must assume it was a farm or something at that time.Ive just come back from a short visit to Muckairn but learnt nothing. He was born Illigitimate to a Kitty Macleod.

Hello 003,

Could this be the same as the place you’re looking for or am I in the wrong area? This is from page 167 of an 1859 Google book “Publications” By Spalding Club, Aberdeen.

To his third son, Donald, Sir John granted the fivepenny lands of Kilmerroy, the sixpenny lands of Auchnacosschen and the fivepenny lands of Classcharvag, together with the office of Baillie-depute of the whole lordship of Mukcarne. The charter is dated at Stirling, 8th June 1544.

In the index there’s alternative spellings CLASGARVAIG and CLASGARRAIK. Google for CLASSCHARVAG and you’ll find the book. You would really have to download this book to be able to comfortably read what’s there as the printing is very small as displayed. Maybe there’s a clue as to location. A lot of the places mentioned there are equally elusive.

Assuming it’s the right area the book spells Muckairn as Mukcarne. If you google that you’ll find more 1500s references on page 293 of “Origines Parochiales Scotiae” which has a promising ring to it. Again it probably needs to be downloaded to be read. Or you could try this one http://www.archive.org/details/origines ... 02unknuoft There’s something on page 132 with even more alternative names for Muckairn Parish (Mocarne, Mocarn, Killespickerrill, Kilespik Kerrill) and something more in the Appendix and could be a map there in the PDF versions as well.

If that’s the right general area and if no one come up with a location maybe a very old parish map and some sorting through of clues may help.

Good Luck,
Alan

Hi utrecht003,

Here's the place that I believe to be Clasgarraig / Classcarraig / Classcharvag / Clasgarvaig and Clasgarraik on a map from 1801.

http://www.nls.uk/maps/joins/581.html
Click on the north-east quarter of that map
Click two or three times just left of centre on that map.
Hopefully you now see the east-west part of Loch Etive
Click on the centre of the south shoreline of that loch.
Just inland of the south shoreline of Loch Etive, you should see Stonefield
Just below that is Coulnadallach.
A short distance below that is Claisyorraig, which I think is the place you are seeking, by yet another spelling variation.
Just below that is Achnacoishin, as mentioned above by Alan.

To see the same place on a modern OS map:
Go to click here (OS landranger grid ref NM949325).
Looking at that map, there doesn't appear to be any building on that site nowadays.

Click on the green arrow to the left of the map to move the map 1km westwards and you will see Auchnacoshan in the SW of the map, partly ocbscured by the copyright notice.

All the best,

AndrewP

That’s okay utrecht003,

Nice work Andrew, I was beginning to think those places were straight out of mythology.
