Hi Dennis
I wonder if Allan Lennox may have lived in Galston but died elsewhere.
Galston is small. the nearest hospital would be Ayr and the hospital may not have been equipped to handle whatever was wrong with him and transferred him to a Glasgow hospital. Remember that the NHS was in its infancy in 1949 and small, rural hospitals often were not fully up-graded for years after the NHS was set up. Even in the 1960's ambulances brought patients from across North Ayrshire up to Paisley and into Glasgow for treatment.
My grandmother lived all her life in Fife but in the early 1950's she had to be transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment and died there.
Family lore still had her dying in Fife. It made finding her death record a rather costly experience.

There is one death in 1938 (but not at Galston) of an Allan Lennox about the correct age.
Interesting that the Allan born 1 Sept 1870 seems to have been registered as Matthew.
MATTHEW LENNOX
Male
Event(s):
Birth: 01 SEP 1870 Galston, Ayr, Scotland
Parents:
Father: WILLIAM LENNOX Family
Mother: ELIZABETH MITCHELL

Hi Annette,
Yes he was born Matthew and there is an RCE showing it changed to Allan.
Hi Lesley,
Yes, I have emailed the owner of the tree, but have not heard back.
Hi Russell,
A broader search looks like it may be the only way to go.
Thanks to all. dennis
