Catherine Fraser-Betts search for death/burial

Post by raehoney » Sun Sep 07, 2008 4:45 pm

Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this, but I am looking for a the death record of Catherine Betts (spouse Timothy Betts). I have the family in the 1901 Census living in West High Street, Inverurie and know that by about 1921 Timothy had moved to England, but I don't know when or where Catherine died.

Catherine was born c. 1853 and my mum thinks she was about 56 when she died, if that helps!

Can anyone please help me with a search in Scotland please?

Many thanks.
Regards

Hi Rae
Have you tried a search yet on Scotlands People? It helps us to know where you have looked already and the results of any searches.
Have you searched freebmd for a likely death in England/Wales?

Do you think she married in Scotland perhaps? Have you any idea of her surname prior to marriage?
I have the family in the 1901 Census living in West High Street, Inverurie
Where does Catherine state she was born in the 1901?
How old are Catherine & Timothy stated as being in 1901?

Do you know where in England Timothy went to?
There is only one Timothy Betts death I can see on freebmd, in Cheltenham aged 72 in 1925..age seems about right when compared with what you have said about Catherine...but free bmd is not compelete, so he may not be the one you are looking for.

Best wishes
Lesley

There's no sign of her having died at Scotland unless it has badly indexed.

Annette

Hi Lesley,
In 1901 Catherine says she was born in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. She is 48. Her husband Timothy was born in England and is 47, so that fits with the death you found.
Their children aged 13 & 14 were born in China, but the 8 year old was born in Inverurie...

Hi Annette,
There is a Cath* Bett (no 's'), born 1853, who died in 1920 in Edinburgh City... a bit older than Rae's mother thought, but it might be her.

All the best,
Sarah

Don't know how I missed that one Sarah. I think I was trying 'other surname' Fraser but perhaps that wasn't her maiden name.

Definitely worth a look!

Thanks for all the trouble you've gone to so soon!

Yes, Catherine's maiden name was Fraser. She and Timothy were married in China and two of her children born there. They moved back to Scotland and lived there for a while, but I do not know when they moved to England, if they ever did as a couple. I have searched freebmd for her death in England with no success.

The 1920 death is a possibility, as mum was born in 1921 and can only remember Timothy "always being there" in her mum & dad's home.

Timothy moved to Cheltenham to live with his daughter and family in 1924, when mum's sister was born and there was no more room in the house. He did indeed die there in 1925.

Catherine's death is a real mystery - her son, by grandpa, didn't like to talk of his family according to mum! Which seems strange, as grandma had a large and gregarious family and we know lots about them!

Many thanks for all your help!
Rae
