Can't find Whiteinch in SP
Hi to everyone,
Sorry i have been out of the picture for a while - i had a close bereavement and did not feel up to doing much to be honest.
Anyway, i am looking at my mother's maternal grandmother's family. Lots of brick walls - they came over from Antrim, Ireland in about 1882.
James McFarlane and Jane McFarlane m.s Dickson (or sometimes Dixon).
I have the family in Stanley Terrace Old Kilpatrick,Clydebank in the 1891 census - all the children that is . No mum and dad - i found their death certs - James died in 1898 in Old Kilpatrick age 49. I did get quite excited about his parents but alas it says Dugald McFarlane (father) but no mothers name!! it has --- McFarlane m.s --- where it should have her name.
Jane died in 1904 in Old Kilpatrick and i found her in the 1901 census living with two of the children. (wonder why the parents weren't on the 1891 census?).
All the children were born in Ireland except the youngest Jane. She is on the 1891 census age 8 born Whiteinch, Renfrewshire. I thought i would have a look at her birth cert but have wasted my credits on tring to find Whiteinch!! i tried Renfrew - no luck then Govan - no luck.
Does anyone know in which district to look?
Thanks for any help,

Hi WilmaM,
Thanks for the reply. I did look in Partick and came up with 3. 2 of them have middle names and one does not. I can't really afford to waste 15 credits on looking at them if Whiteinch doesn't come under Partick!
As you say i thought Govan would have been nearer to Whiteinch at that time.
I posted in case someone had came across it before and could advise. Maybe someone will know. Thanks again.

Whiteinch and Partick are next to each other, Govan and Partick are seperated by the Clyde.
Mosy of my lot are in whiteinch which is covered by Partick.
Partick used to be part of Govan Parish, and you still see plenty of old buildings with Govan Parish on them.
Very confusing!!

Hi crayspond,
When you looked at the 1891 census and found the children but no parents were you looking on SP or Ancestry? I found the family with parents on Ancestry. If you looked on SP, the parents might be on the previous page from the page the children are on. I think viewing it would cost 1 credit if I remember right.
Ancestry has James McFarlane born in Partick, Lanarkshire, 44 yrs old and a Borler Maker (boiler maker?). The family is living at 1 Stanley Terrace, Clydebank, Dumbartonshire. Jane is 46 yrs. The children are Lizzie 17, Maggie 16, Dugald 14, James 12, Ellen 10, Jane 8.

Hi Carol,
Thanks for that - it was on SP that i viewed the census. It does cost 5 credits to view the previous page. I should have really but had probably ran out of credits. Also as there is a strong irish connection i thought they might have been away on the night.
I am surprised (and pleased) if James was born in Partick as it will help me with his parents now. It is definitely the same family. Thanks for that again.
David - Thanks for your help. I know how confusing the parishes were as lots of my and my husband's family came from Tradeston,Anderston,Camlachie etc etc - so confusing.

Hello All
Glad to see that Ailsa's question has been answered so quickly.
20 yrs earlier on the 1871 census for my family, the header said
Parish of Govan, Police Burgh of Partick, Village of Whiteinch.
From Andrew Aird, 1894 - Glimpses of Old Glasgow:
"WHITEINCH is but of recent growth; but it has grown rapidly. At present it has a population of 6,600. It is sure to expand still more when the railway now forming is opened. Already it has a tastefully laid-off public park, with an artificial pond for the sailing of model yachts. While the ground was being levelled, several interesting relics of the stone age were found. A number of fossil trees were also discovered, which have proved a source of attraction to thousands of citizens as well as to visitors to the metropolis of the west."

Hi again Ailsa,
It's been a while since I looked at SP and I had a toothache when I posted that about the SP census credits! The tooth is fixed. I'm broke,
but back at the computer.
Here's an 1851 Census for you to consider:
James McFarlane 6 yrs born abt 1846
Father: Dugald
Mother: Margaret
Partick, Lanarkshire
Govan
Dumbarton Road Bruce Place
Dugald McFarlane 35
Margaret 31
Isabella 14
Margaret 7
James 5
Dugald 2
Elisabeth 8 mon.
Didn't get Dad's occupation. Will go back and get that now!

Back again Ailsa,
Dugald McFarlane was a saw sharpener on the 1851 Census. He was born in Dunning, Perth in 1816.
Margaret McFarlane was born in Dore Cotland, Perth in 1820.
Their daughter Isabella was also born in Dore Cotland, but all the other children were born in Partick.

Thanks to all the lovely people at SP for your help. I am in Glasgow at the moment and don't have access to my computer but i am amazed at the info re James and his family - and it looks like a Perth connection too.
I will look at his birth cert when i return - i still don't have his mother's m.s. hopefully it will comee up on his birth cert.
Thanks again,
Ailsa
