Help deciphering certificate

Post by crayspond » Mon Oct 06, 2008 1:59 pm

Hi Folks,

I have uploaded (i hope) a birth cert of Dougald McFarlane 1815 - sadly it doesn't say if it's a church register or not. I am finding it hard to read what the last few words say. Any help appreciated.

As far as I can see, it says:

October
8th Dougald son to Dougald McFarlane
woolspinner late in Dunning and Elizabeth
Garvie born 18th May ult in Fornication.

Hi WilmaM,

That's what i thought it said! not sure about the ult though - wonder if they were punished!
I wonder if they married at all or if young Dougal had any siblings. This is my first mention of him on paper i have been trying for a few weeks to find him - i think the spelling of Dougald had thrown me off the scent i had him as Dugald.

I had to check up on what ult actualy means:

Ultimo
adv. (Abbr. ult.)
In or of the month before the present one: on the 15th ultimo.

As it says for the Father - late in Dunning - I would say he'd done a runner long before the baby arrived, so couldn't be punished.

Hi Ailsa and Wilma,
Looks like the Dunning Kirk Session records are available at NAS... might be worth a look! I'm sure she got a talking to, even if he was already long gone.

Sarah

Hi Sarah and Wilma,
How do you look at the kirk sessions at NAS? It might be worth a look. Maybe the ult means the year before as he was born 08/10/1815 and this record is Oct 1816.

Hi Ailsa
Ult usually refers to the month, not the year, but I see your thinking on that one, as the month is already mentioned.

Currently to see the Kirk Session records at NAS you would need to go there. They are digisitised and on the PCs at NAS in Edinburgh, with plans for them to be more widely available on the internet eventually, for a pay as you go fee.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi All,
Just thought i would give you an update to Dougald McFarlane.
I reckon he did leave her high and dry as i can find no marriage records for him and Elisabeth Garvie.
I did find in the IGI, children of Elisabeth Garvie and James Cree or Crie from 1805 to 1809 Ann, Jean and David all of Dunning Perth.
Maybe her husband died and she hooked up with Dougald in 1815 and had young Dougald.

Just thought i would let you know.
Thanks for the help,
Ailsa
