Help deciphering maiden name of ancestor

Post by runepriest » Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:57 pm

Hey all;

I have found, (what I believe) to be an ancestors marriage record; James Smart and Margaret ?

SP says her maiden name is Hossack, but I don't see it that way.

Also, I have the marriage of Elizabeth Smart to George Lawson. Again, the mother's maiden name is hard to decipher. The name is on the third line from the bottom of the page

Any help in this area, is as always, greatly appreciated.

Link for birth record:

Thanks.

Hi Brian
Looks like Hossack to me on the marriage record, with the older style of writing a double s.

Likewise Hossack on the 2nd document.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Brian,

I agree with SP, with her surname being Hossack. It is in that old script, there the ss is written like ƒs. In this case - Hoƒsack

All the best,

I've a number of ancestors with the name Hossack - they all came from Cromarty, if that's any help. It seems to have been quite a common name in the area.

Would any of them be married to a James Smart? 8)

Andrew and Lesley:

Thanks for the help..........my wife suggested the same thing after I had made the initial post (funny how that is)

Thanks again for the quick response.

None that I know of. I just mentioned it in case you're going further back because it does seem to have been a name very common in the Cromarty and Inverness areas.

I appreciate the suggestion. It was one of those comments that really doesn't translate to the net. No offense intended.

I'll keep Cromarty and Inverness in mind. Thank you :)
