Help with marriage certificate please

Post by garibaldired » Tue Oct 14, 2008 7:03 pm

Hi All,

I've uploaded a certificate to the gallery which should be approved soon (thank you in advance!).

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1663

It's not terribly clear but there are just 2 bits which have escaped me completely. Can anyone work out Thomas' mother's maiden name and the name of the second witness?

Thanks.

Meg

Hi Meg,

Here is my interpretation of the certificate.

1895 on the Twentyfourth day of December at Oxenford South Lodge, Parish of Cranston
After Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland
Signed Thomas Elliot, Joiner, Batchelor; 26; Jonstonburn, Humbie
Signed Christian Strathearn, Domestic Servant, Spinster; 28; Jonstonburn, Humbie
Thomas Elliot, Mill Worker; Elizabeth Elliot, M.S. Hardie
John Strathearn, Roadman (deceased); Jane Strathearn, M.S. Dobie (deceased)
Signed Adam W Ferguson, Minister in Crichton
Signed Robert Elliot, Witness
Kate(?) Caroline Sampson, Witness
1895 December 27th at Cranston, Robert _____, Registrar.

Is the groom the Thomas Elliot shown on the IGI as born in County Down in 1870? With an older sister Margaret born in Galashiels?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

Thanks once again :)

I would never have got those two names unaided though I can see them now.
I haven't started on Thomas yet so he could well be that one on the IGI.

Christina's mother was actually Margaret not Jane but as she died when Christina was only 6 perhaps an understandable error. Sad though isn't it?
Rather a sad family really as both parents died young leaving young children; a sister of Christina's died of small pox and another sister was put on trial for child murder/ concealment of pregnancy (Iwill get to NAS one day to read about that!). It's no wonder that Robert Strathearn born 1856 seems to disappear into thin air!

Probably too much information here - sorry for rambling on :)

Best wishes,
Meg
