Need help finding an 1871-1872 birth.....

Post by CathieL » Sat Jul 16, 2005 2:56 am

Tonight I have spent a lot of time and quite a few credits on SP looking for my grandmother Catherine Connolly (I hit a brick wall looking for my grandfather Patrick Connolly and decided to give up on him for a while). I had hit a brick wall with Catherine last year but after looking over what I had on her I had some brainwaves (instead of my usual senior moments)and after some convoluted moves I found her!
I have her marriage to Patrick in 1898, I have the births and some deaths of each of her children and I have her death in 1921. I have her in the 1881 census with her mother, brother and stepfather, the 1891 census when she is on her own and the 1901 census with Patrick and her sons. All of these give me 1871-1872 as her birthdate, I have her parents marriage in 1868 and her brother's birth in 1869 but no sign anywhere of her birth. I have tried SP and I have tried IGS.
Catherine's parents were Joseph Stewart and Margaret Campbell and all of the records are in Glasgow, mostly Hutchensontown. I am very happy with what I have accomplished tonight but I really need help finding the birth, anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Cathie,

Do you know when Joseph Stewart died?
Maybe Catherine was born after, and is registered under mother Margaret's name?

Hello Jack
Thanks for looking at my question. I was not able to find Joseph's death. His wife remarried a William McAleer in 1877 and they are listed in the 1881 census for the Gorbals. Catherine and her brother Charles are listed as stepchildren and Catherine's age is given as 9, birthplace Glasgow Lanark. Joseph was a potter's foreman but I was not able to find much about him. His marriage to Margaret in 1868 gives his age as 27. There is nothing about Catherine in the IGI (I never have any luck there) and I have looked at all the possibles on SP. She has to be somewhere but I have run out of ideas.

Hi Cathie,

Have you looked at this one that I found on the IGI
  • Catherine Campbell
14 APR 1872 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
(no father named), mother = Margaret Campbell
Could the father have died before her birth, and she has been registered using only her mother's name?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Cathie,

I was just clutching at straws with this birth! and wee Catherine brought up with Margaret's married name of Stewart.
Most likely i'm doing Margaret a great injustice with these thoughts!

CATHERINE CAMPBELL - Birth: 14 APR 1872 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Mother: MARGARET CAMPBELL
--
Calton is on the north bank of the River Clyde from Hutchesontown - though not too far away over the Albert Bridge.

ps, oops just noticed Andrew has already mentioned the birth!

Hello Andrew, Annette and Jack
I had not thought of Catherine being registered as a Campbell because Margaret and Joseph were married in 1868 at 276 Vincent Street " after Banns according to the Terms? of the Free Church". When Margaret married William in 1877 she is listed as Margaret Stewart or Campbell, widow and they were married in in St. Francis Chapel Cumberland Street as Catholics.
As far as I can see Catherine used the name Stewart until she married Patrick. Before she married she had illegitimate twin boys and she named them Joseph ( who only lived for an hour) and Charles, after her father and brother. Charles used the name Stewart all his life.
As tempting as it is I don't think Catherine Campbell is my Catherine.
When I was very young we would visit my uncle Charlie and it never occurred to me that my cousin was Cathie Stewart and I was Cathie Connolly even though our fathers were brothers. Would not have mattered because no-one would have explained to me anyway!!!
My parents never spoke of such matters because in those days skeletons in the closet were never mentioned, how I wish I had asked questions in the later days. On the other hand I am amazed at what I have learned so far now that I have become addicted to family history. This is a wonderful site and I spend much of my time reading all the posts, everyone is so friendly and helpful.
Looks like I am rambling now, so time to stop!
Thank you all for your interest

Hi Cathie,

The word could possibly be "... Forms of the Free Church". I notice that Joseph & Margaret's marriage (Blythswood) & son Charles' birth (Central) are on the north bank of the river.
It's not unknown for a child to be given a different name from what's on their BC - saves tiresome explanations!

Just some personal thoughts on what i'd do next.
--
Look at Catherine Campbell's 1872 BC.
There's an outside chance that the BC has more than what is shown on the IGI.

Find Margaret & son Charles on the 1871 census - just to check address and to see if Joseph is still living, or if Margaret is a widow.
You never know - address may be the same as the 1872 BC!

If nothing positive shows up, then it's back to the drawing board!
But no matter what, i'd still like to find when & where Joseph died.

Hi Jack
I looked up the Catherine Campbell birth and the address is 139 Saltmarket. Mother Margaret Campbell, shirtmaker. I cannot find Joseph or Margaret or Charles in the 1871 census. There are quite a number of Margaret Stewarts and also Charles Stewarts and I viewed a lot of them until my credits ran out. I also looked at quite a few deaths for Joseph between 1869 and 1876, there are not that many but none of them is him. I am beginning to wonder if he died somewhere other than Lanark.
I guess you are right, it is back to the drawing board, at least until I can afford another bunch of credits.
Thanks, Cathie

Hi Cathie,

Pity no connection, but what was Margaret's occupation when she married in 1868? Anything like shirtmaker?

Do you have the address on son Charles' 1869 BC?
I'll have a look at the 1871 census street index for there & 139 Saltmarket.
