Mary Ann McBreen - help with parents

Post by bluedaisy » Tue Nov 04, 2008 12:00 pm

I've uploaded two images to the gallery - thanks in advance for their approval.

My GF birth extract shows his parents as Mary Ann McBreen and Thomas Lyons - so I duly downloaded their marriage cert from SP (and have added it to the gallery)
So far as I can tell her parents are John McBreen (horse shoer) and Ann Log, both deceased at the time of the marriage in 1904.
I couldn't get anywhere with John McBreen and Ann Log so next downloaded Mary Ann's birth extract (also added to the gallery) which shows her parents as Philip McBreen (horse shoer) and Sarah Logue(?).

The difference in the names is causing me some consternation. I also have one of Thomas and Marys childrens deaths certs hich shows her as Mary Ann Brein.

Any comments, advice or deciphering aid greatly appreciated.

Sarah McBreen/Logue died in 1888 so that would cetainly fit with her being deceased when Mary Ann was married in 1901.

Haven't found anything for Philip so far.

Have you found Mary-Ann in the 1891 or 1901 census ? That should help determine her parents' names.

Mary Ann is a domestic servant at Blantyre in 1901 and so far not to be found in 1891.

Hi Maura, Assuming you are certain the 2 Mary Ann's are the same person ( it seems likely to me ) , then the discrepancy in names could be explained by a mistake during the registration of the marriage
or if Mary Ann was orphaned or abandoned early in life , she might not have known much about her parents ?

This could be Philip & Sarah in 1881 :

1881
Philip Breen
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855
Relationship: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 644/8
Registration district: Milton
Civil Parish: Glasgow Milton
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 20 Maitland St
Occupation: Blacksmith
ED: 77
Household schedule number: 107
Line: 1
Roll: cssct1881_234
Household Members:
Name Age
Philip Breen 26
Sarah Logg 24

Sarah is a general servant and also born in Ireland.

Here are Sarah's parents in 1881, the same couple Mary Ann is living with in 1891.

Thanks to AndrewP for the addition of the URLs

MAN! You guys are good! :D I am seriously impressed - it is taking me hours to work things out in ever increasing circles it seems like and two just get all the relevant info like you've snapped your fingers and it's there!! Wowee!

Thank you so much.

Those McBreens just seem to materialise out of nowhere - I will just have to keep searching - I can't find Philip, or his parents, James and Mary, in any census or death extract.

And it's very frustrating that these lines end up back in Ireland aswell, looks like I am Irish through and through :D

Hi Maura:

See the alternate spelling in this thread - it may offer some alternatives for searching.
