Trying to trace someone

Post by AngelaS » Sun Nov 16, 2008 9:57 pm

Have run out of ideas looking for someone. Can anyone help?

The person was born Agnes Pollock on 18th Nov 1889 in Blytheswood, Glasgow. She was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Pollock. In the 1891 census she was living at Richard St, Blytheswood in her uncle's home with her mother and brother. I can't find any trace of her after this. her mother married Francis Johnston in 1892 or 1893 so I have tried tracing her as Agnes Johnston but with no luck.

Any help or suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks

Angela

Hi Angela
I've had one or two similar cases, and I've not been able to trace them. I think what may have happened (but not necessarily in your case) is that the child may have been adopted or taken in by another family, takes on their surname in subsequent records, and from our point of view, disappears entirely! :?
In one case the child was sent to live with the grandparents, over 300 miles away, so there is always a chance she may be in a different area altogether.

Another possibility is that she my have died very young. Have you checked for a death for her?
Do you have her mother's household in the 1901?

Best wishes
Lesley

One of mine "dissapears" very young and was found on 1901 census with an unrelated family and so it couldnt be proved 100% but was as close as it gets and later on letters i was given backed up a lot but gave me another worry as this child then dissapears late 1901- no mention of her in letters after that.
The short of the long story is ..............She was placed in an orphanage age 3 then when she was "released" emigrated hence the reason why i couldnt find a marriage or death in Scotland.

My next port of call would be to check the poor house registers at the Mitchell for mum as there is every possiblity she had to apply for assistance later in the pregnancy as she would be unable to work. There may be clues there that can give you a better idea of the family circumstances. I found loads of info on one of my lines that way.

Good luck!

Annie :)

Thanks for all your suggestions. Will keep looking. The poor house records will probably be a good starting point. Will let you know if I have any luck.
