Greetings everyone
I am looking for proof if the death of my great grandfather Chales Courtneidge. He was born in Leatherhead in 1825 and served in the Merchant Navy as First Mate. He married Jane Wight in Edinburgh in 1855. By 1857 he was in Glasgow and died in 1859. I have been unable to find a death certificate.

Hi mhodge,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
I had a look on ScotlandsPeople using a variety of wildcard searches and found no sign of Charles' death certificate. What information do you have that tells you he died in 1859? Does this information point to him definitely having been in Scotland at the time of his death?
All the best,
AndrewP

On that same page, there is another possibility - Charles Courtenidge, who died in Epsom, again no indication of age on the index page.SarahND wrote:There is a Charles Courtneidge on FreeBMD who died in 1860 in Wandsworth, Greater London. No indication of how old he was, however. Might your Charles have gone down to London and died while there?

Unfortunately ages didn’t appear on the index until about 1865.
Here’s another one in Wandsworth. Found it with a Court* which is fair enough too. I suppose they couldn’t figure out what the middle letters were. It’s 16 from the top on the image and looks pretty clear to me. http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/informat ... 1225799362

Hi AndrewP'
Thanks for your message.I am pretty sure Charles Courtneidge died in 1859 as this is stated in the autobiography of his son, Robert.
As he was in the Merchant Navy he may very well have died at sea but I have had seraches done in London without success.
He is not the Charles Courtneidge who died in Wandsworth in 1860.
Thanks again for your interest.
All the best, Maureen H
