Hi Angela,
It certainly looks like Jackson to me.
I couldn't find any sign of his birth on SP either, but as he was born before 1855 (Statutory Registration began) it is quite possible it isn't there to find. There was no legal obligation to register a birth up to and including 1854, although the Church of Scotland did try and "encourage" folk to do it. In fact, the pre-1855 registers are actually parish records of baptisms rather than births. Only a few give the birthdate as well.
What does his death certificate say about his mother's name?

Hi Angela
and welcome to Talking Scot
Henry's marriage took place in the Free Church, so there is a very high liklihood that he will not turn up in the Church of Scotland OPRs, and that probably explains why you are not seeing him on SP or on IGI.
Likewise, if the parents married between 1843 (the year of the Disruption, when the Free Church broke away from the CoS) and 1855, the marriage will also not be in the OPRs.
Records do exist for some of the Free Churches - they are either held at NAS or locally with copies held at NAS (National Archives of Scotland). With an area as large as Glasgow though, you would need to know what area of the city he was from, as I think there were several Free Churches in the city. The census may help you with that - have you tried the 1851 when he should be at home with his parents? Try Freecen first: www.freecen.org.uk or Ancestry as you've said you already have a sub.
As both parents are said to be still alive at the time of the marriage, have you tried a search for thier deaths on SP? Start with Hannah first, as you can use both surnames. (though on a quick search, I'm not seeing anything obvious for her....
)
Is Henry the one with children Hannah, John, James & David in 1881, living at 16 Albert St, Glasgow?
Best wishes
Lesley

Since you've taken out an ancestry subscription I'm sure you will have found what appears to be the family in 1851 living at Maryhill. Hannah is indexed as Anna. Both John and Anna were born at England as was Henry's sister Sarah.
Here are a couple of Henry's siblings -
Results for: Father: John Clark, Mother: Hannah Jackson
1. ALEXANDER CLARK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 12 APR 1856 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. JANE CLARK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 06 MAR 1860 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
This will help you to find them in 1861 (Jane is indexed as Jean and mother Hanna)
Regards,
Annette

thanks for you replys, and i thought this would be easy!!
on henry clarks death entry in 1898,john his father is listed as dead.but hannah the mother is alive.i did a search on john clark 1870 at the time of the marriage to his sons death in 1898,and about 800+ john clarks deaths came up!! without having a endless pit of cash at the moment to view every one.
and that is assuming that john clark lived in scotland,as i cannot be sure that henry was born in scotland.
the henry clark from the 1881 census is the one i am looking for,it also shows that he called two of his children after his parents.
the family from the 1851 census is also very intresting as john clark occupation is a carter on henrys 1898 death entry is says the same.
and last but not least i have found a 1851 census. henry clark born in gosnall in staffodshire on 1849.father john clark, mother hannah.
i am sorry i started this.
thanks again
angela.

it looks like the family on the 1851 census is the one am looking for,as i found alexander clark birth details on sp.with john clark as father and hannah jackson as mother.
i still cannot find any information on the deaths of john or hannah.i wonder if they moved back down south to england.
also with the extra information about john and hannah birth dates from the 1851 census,i am trying to find out about them.
but again nothing coming up ancestry, about there wedding or even there deaths.
thanks again for everybodys help

John senior and Hannah are living at Dobbies Loan, Glasgow in 1871 indexed as Clarke.
Alexander (a butcher) and John (van man) are with them. They also have a nephew, Henry Winter(a butcher) born England that might help with the search.
I'm sure this must be John junior in 1881 -

well it looks as if i have drawn a blank with any extra information about john and hannah clark.the only other information i have found is that john son john jnr was married in 1875.on the entry on sp it shows john snr still alive.
so between 1875 and 1898 in johns son henry death entry.both john and hannah have vanished.i can find no details on sp of there deaths.so i asume that they moved back to england.i have not much joy in tracing from down there either.
i only really wanted to trace the main clark male line as far back as i could, but without john or hannah deaths.i am going to stuggle.
now to move onto rhe other side of the family!!!!!!
thanks again.
