Death in Infancy

Post by david macdiarmid » Mon Dec 29, 2008 11:02 pm

Can anyone give me a bit of advice, please.I know my Granny had eight children.Three still living my Mum 83,My Aunt 96 and my Uncle 81.Of the other five i have very little knowledge of.I have a birth cert of William Sutherland 9th Nov 1921,he lived two months but i cant find a death cert.I think Neil was born in 1913 but not sure and my Mum told me of a George who i know nothing about. The other two my mum knows existed but thinks they died in infancy.I know their was a high rate of child deaths at this time but even if born and only lived a short time would a birth cert and a death cert always be issued,Thanks for your time,David

Hi David,

Yes a birth and death certificate should have been issued if the baby lived, even for a short time.

Try a death search at Scotlands People for the others by putting Sutherland as a surname. Then put their mother's maiden name in too. Hopefully if they lived long enough it will be recorded.

Regards,
Annette

David,

Have you checked Scotlandspeople. There is a William Selkirk Sutherland who was born and died in Kinglassie Fife in 1921.

There are several other William Sutherlands age zero who died in 1922. Do you know where the family lived? What were your grandparents names?

Ina

Hello David,

A long shot I know but by any chance did your Sutherlands originate from Kildonan/Golspie?

Hi Annette,Funny you should ask that. For about 20yrs i have been looking for my Granny's Mother in Law on a sort of casual basis, because i thought being directly linked to that area was the reason i could not find her.I had some spare time over Xmas and went for it.The simple mistake i made was that i was spelling her name wrong, instead of Johan i was calling her Johanna. All of a sudden that whole line opened up after all these years.Although they were obviously from the Sutherland area i have them in Leith certainly in the 1830's Slainte,David
