No. 70, Lugar in 1924 Death Certificate

Post by Hugo » Sat Jan 17, 2009 3:38 pm

I have a 1924 death cert which gives the place of death as No. 70, Lugar. The entry for the next person is No.63, Lugar.

As an Ayrshire man, I know of Lugar. However, I am puzzled by the lack of a street name.

Does anyone know if Lugar in 1924 only had one street?

Or am I missing something?

I would have included a relevant of the death cert, only I have forgotten how to do it!

Hi Hugo,

I lived in Balvicar, a village in Argyll for a few years 2001 - 2005.

Although it did have what could be described as "streets" (dirt track lanes with a few cottages off the main lane through it) our addresses were simply the number of the house and the village name.

It didn't half confuse the poor temporary postman when our regular guy was on holiday

Hi hugo,
I've looked at a few old maps for Lugar, it seems as if it did indeed have only 1 street at the time period you are looking at.

By 1938 there were a few 'names' Brick Row', 'Peesweep Row' 'Front Row' but the 1911 one didn't show these.
A look at a larger map [1923/26] only shows one row on the main road and another near the iron works, with scattered buildings here and there.

Look at: http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and http://www.nls.uk/maps/counties/index.html#ayrshire

for yourself.

Many thanks Wilma. I thought about looking for a map but did not know of these sites.
