Missing a family

Post by Dennis » Mon Feb 09, 2009 5:31 am

Hi,

I have a family that seems to only exist in the 1881 census.

Mary Lennox (1848-?) married William Rothwell (1839-?) in Edinburgh on June 16, 1864.

They had 7 children, all girls:

Elizabeth (1864-?) Mary (1866-?) Catherine (1869-?) Margaret (1871-?) Julia (1872-?) Jessie (1875-?) Helen (1877-?)

I can't find them in the 1891 nor 1871 census

Although Catherine is not in the 1881 census, she is in the familysearch for William & Mary

Hi Dennis:

Have you tried searching for the surname R*thwell? There seems to be William along with Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth as second people in the 1871 census.

There is a tree on Ancestry that relates to all of their children. That might be worth a 14 day trial - as long as you remember to cancel your subscription, if you don't want to go beyond the 14 days.

Hi Dennis,

This looks like them in Edinburgh in 1871 (from Ancestry). If Ancestry has them transcribed correctly, then they should be a straight-forward find on ScotlandsPeople.

William Rothwell 32
Mary Rothwell 23
Elizabeth Rothwell 6
Mary Jane Rothwell 4
Catherine Rothwell 2

All the best,

Given Andrew's 1871 find, it looks like there is a good chance that young Catherine may have died before the next census.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello,

I'll have to go with Ancestry then as I am still not finding them on the 1871 census on SP. Oh, wait a minute they are on SP as R'u'thwell. Paddyscar I did the R*thwel as you suggested. Wonder if SP needs to reindex their surnames?

Thank you all. dennis

Hmm don't see them in 1891, even with the wildcard.

Which Ancestry, .com or .co.uk ?

Hi Dennis:

You can search both historical records (BMD and Census) or Trees on this page.

I have sent you a PM.

A few scraps,

There’s a small amount of information and a contact on this page http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin ... &id=I23894

Do any of these people from the 1901 Census fit the bill? (not necessarily in same household)
Mary Rothwell, 53, Scotland, London Islington
Margaret Rothwell, 29, Edinburgh Scotland, London, Infirmary Nurse
Julia Rothwell, 28, Scotland Edinboro, London, Nursing Institution
W Rothwell, 61, Scotland, Kent, Confectioner

FreeBMD
Marriages Jun 1910
QUARTERMAIN Walter Islington 1b523
Rothwell Julia Ann Islington 1b523

1911 census, Julia was born Scotland. These are the Quartermains in the same household.
QUARTERMAIN, WALTER, M, 1869, 42, Croydon, Surrey
QUARTERMAIN, JULIA ANNE, F, 1873, 38, Croydon, Surrey
QUARTERMAIN, ALAN, M, 1910, 4 MONTHS, Croydon, Surrey
