Hi, if any body out there could point me in the right direction it would really be appreciated, you you get one certificate you just can't find, and the more you look you just can't see it, then it becomes an obsession???
Well here's mine!
1851 Ann Good (Goad) aged 46 living in Fala with her daughter Ann Mc Cormick aged 8, born c1843 Perth,
1861 Ann Good aged 56 living in Blacksheils, and Ann Good junior aged 18, field worker, working in Legerwood
1871 Ann Good (snr) aged 66 living with her grandson James Good aged 7 born c1864 Haddington, and Ann jnr living and working in North Leith.
Do you think I can find James birth cert???
Can I heck!!!!
My thinking is that Ann jnr had her baby James, but Grand brought him up. while Ann jnr went out to work, and that she was sent away to have her baby but I have searched for every James Good born in Scotland in that year range and nothing is coming back!
I think she may have given him the fathers surname at birth, then reverted back to Good? If so is there any way of finding the BC???
Also when Ann jnr marries in 1877 she gives her parents as John Good and Ann Good ms Good, I think she lied about being illigitimate, would this have been common?
Thanks in anticipation!
Susan.
help appreciated!

Hi Susie
You can search the IGI for all James ( any surname ) born to an Ann Good - but you have probably done that already and found there are no results close to 1864 !!
So perhaps Ann used another surname herself ? - -
Hugh Wallis' site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ughwallis/
gives the batch numbers for each parish on the IGI at www.familysearch.org.
So if you are not sure of mother's surname you can search a batch for all James born to Ann and then see if any of the results seem possible.
Re the 1871 census - I am right in thinking James place of birth was Humbie, Haddingtonshire rather than Haddington ( this is what Ancestry gives it as - mind you the surname is Wood there !) ) ? For the relevant time period the batch number for Humbie is C117101 and for Haddington it is C117091.
Searching batch C117101 on the IGI form James born to Ann in Humbie in the right time period gives a few results. One that looked interesting
was a James Robertson Cormie born 09 APR 1863 in Humbie to an Ann Cormie. Might Cormie be a variant of McCormick ?
It may well be a red herring , but you never know...

Hi Susan,
James Robertson Cormic (mistranscribed as Cormie on the online IGI) is well worth another look at. Born illegitimate at Blackshiels, Humbie to Ann Cormic. Unless the surname Robertson appears elsewhere in the family, then it could well be a clue towards the father's name.
The details of James's 1884 marriage (very near to Humbie) to Helen Mills confirms the Robertson link. His 1928 death is only a few miles from there.
He is in Humbie with his wife and four children on the 1891 census. They are only a few miles away in the 1901 census with 7 of their children (including the son who later registered his death). Between the two censuses, you find names for 8 children born across a span of about 14 years. As the youngest was an infant in 1901, there could have been more to follow.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hiya,
Grannysrock, so sorry for discounting your theory!
but hey my gut feelings maybe ain't what they should/used to be!
Andrew, i had a look at the IGI and i think in all honesty that is what put me off!
Tonight i have had a look at the original cert, and this time i know its right ha!
I still don't know bout the Robertson link as Ann didn't marry Robert Robertson till 1877, when she was 29, so doing my maths would that be correct that she had James when she was only 15! Also when she got married she gave her parents as John Good and Ann m.s. Good, still as of yet i can find not a hint of a relationship with these two!
So many questions lol!
Now going to see if i can find the kind neighbour who informed on James birth cert!
Thank you all humbly once again.
(Btw i too married a Robertson, what goes around comes around!)
A very short p.s, thanks Andrew, just found them in the 1901 census under the surname Gard!
No one said this was going to be easy.

Unusually, Ancestry transcribed the surname correctly, and GROS/SP got it wrong. It is normally the other way round.
Ancestry transcribed the address as Knock Cottages. I am fairly sure it is Kevock Cottages. Kevock can be found between Lasswade and Loanhead.
Streetmap showing Kevock Road
All the best,
