Looking on Scotlandspeople for James Carrigan (born abt 1859), and siblings Mary (born abt 1864) William (born abt 1866), Elizabeth (born abt 1868) and Lily (born abt 1881). Have found later records for all, including 1861,71,81,91 census), marriages and deaths, but cannot find any of the births even though census state they were all born in Scotland!!
Parents John Carrigan and Ellen (Ms Kennedy),born in Ireland, but in New Monkland Lanarkshire where James was born, (1861 census says place of birth New Monkland), but he and other siblings in later census said to be born in "Lanark - Springburn" - apart from Lily said to be born in "Glasgow", where family later lived (Calton, Parkhead area). (They also lived in "Uphill, West Lothian in 1871)
Can anyone help re logic of no birth entries? Have looked at "All records".. "glasgow".... "New Monkland".... "Springburn".... .. So confusing. Have looked also for spelling variations as family is listed under Carrigan (1861 census), Cargan (1871 census), Kirgan (1881 census) - and also "Corrigan".. then back to "Carrigan" in 1891 census. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

looks like you'll need to be inventive with the surname.
Here is Elizabeth -
ELIZABETH KERGAN
15 APR 1866 Springburn, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JOHN KERGAN Family
Mother: HELEN KENNEDY
and William -
WILLIAM KERRIGAN
Birth:
16 APR 1864 Springburn, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JOHN KERRIGAN
Mother: HELEN KENNEDY
James is also Kerrigan on the IGI
The only one I can find for Mary is a submission.
Regards,
Annette

Thanks again everyone, have found birth entries for James (1859), Mary (1862), William 1864, (all under Kerrigan), and Elizabeth (1866) (under Kergan) - all thanks to your suggestions re surname variations. The fact that the 1871 census ages were all out by about 2 years minimum, didn't help!! Now all that remains is Lily Carrigan said to be about 4, 7, or 9 months old in 1881 census (again hard to decipher). Have looked under the above variations, but not hitting paydirt yet. Thanks to your expert advice, I will continue searching.... and do loads and loads of lateral thinking ! Cheers everyone.

thanks to everyone's help, we have nearly finalised a family subgroup - the Carrigan siblings. the only one remaining is Lily Carrigan (Kergan, Kerrigan, Cargan???) She definitely appears with family in 1881 and 1891 census, and marries later, but the only record I can find re birth is on IGI, where she is listed as Lily Kergan, born about 1881 to John and Helen Kergan. I find Familysearch.org a bit difficult to figure out. It would appear that IGI can offer me no further info, and Scotlandspeople fails with "Lily Kergan" spelling... have tried many other spellings... no luck. Any ideas anyone? I have also tried variations of "Lily"... no luck. There appears to be a big gap between the second youngest sibling Elizabeth and Lily (13 years difference). ?? too far fetched to think that she wasn't child of John and Helen at all? Is it possible birth was not registered at all?
Any ideas welcome - again.... Thanks a million
Maggie
