Getna Green Marriage

Post by margarita » Mon Sep 07, 2009 11:05 am

I have ancestors from Carlisle who, family rumour has it eloped and married at the Blacksmiths in Gretna Green. This would probably have been around 1831.

I've looked on Scotland's people, but they're not there. Does that mean that that they didn't marry there?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks,
Maggie

Don't know how useful this might be but there is searchable index here-

It was very useful, thank you.

They were named there, so it confirms the story.

However I don't think I'll shell out £15.00 for the information.

Maggie

Any ideas on why I can't find them on ScotlandsPeople?

Their names were John Kelly & Margaret Foster & they would have married around 1830

Regards,

maggie

Hi Maggie
The marriages before 1855 on Scotlands People are taken from the OPRs. As a Gretna marriage was an "irregular marriage", not a church marriage, the event will not appear in the OPRs, so not on SP.

See http://www.gla.ac.uk/departments/scotti ... /marriage/
for more info

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,

Thank you for that information & the link.

Although I was born in Scotland, this is my first foray north of the border as far as researching the family is concerned.

I've obviously got a lot to learn.

Regards,
Maggie
